Grant Thomas has to be the worst coach in the AFL. Considering the talent and time he's had with this crop of players, he should resign, not use his players at scapegoats for his own incompetencies as a leader.

Geez, just imagine what a good coach could do with that side. A coach that has the respect of the players. Someone like a Sheedy or a Pagan
Grant must come real cheap or he wields some heavy clout there.

Capuano may not be the world beater they want but not for lack of trying.
Coming back after each injury to support his mates. He deserves better.
I would not like to be a saints player ATM. They are finished!

SSSHHHHHHH!!!
Chalky, we need to keep that quiet. Wink
We dont want St Kilda getting their off field act together, ie start by sacking Butterss. If they did that, the board would sack Thomas and get a real coach. If they did that, they have the talent to be a great team.
It is unbeleivable that the rest of the football world can see what a joke St Kilda is, and what a poor culture they have, but they see nothing wrong. The idiots there think they if they just keep going the way they are, success will eventually come. They could not be more wrong.

St. Kilda's problem is, they aren't good enough to win, all the decent players they have had, and they had a decent coach and they still lost. They should of given Malcolm Blight more time to work with, instead of expecting a miracle right away. NO one can turn a team around in only a few months, it's not possible.

How embarrassing for the Saints to be beaten by the Pies in hit-outs - the only team this year:

No wonder they had to make a sudden and dramatic change.

Maguire didn't do much better.

well according to ur link we beat essendon by one hit out too haha.
interesting link that, shows what a roasting (in the hit outs) we got from geelong and adelaide yet still managed to win both games!

Missed that one.

I must admit I agree with chalky on this one. Not much use having a specialist tap ruck when the centre clearanceas are nearly always decided by the running centremen. Even a top ruckman only influences centre clearances in a minority of contests.

Proto, we are very efficient in the clearances. Combined centre, boundary and ball ups we are top, as we were last year. We may lose large share of taps but get more takeaways than any other team.
As Mike has restated, taps are only efficient in a small number of instances per game (at least I'm not alone anymore. Hooray!)
It is the strength and class of the midfield that in the majority of cases will determine clearances.
Capuano is a prime example - if he cannot win taps he is completely useless to the club because that is all he can do.
Why invest in this type of player?

You're certainly not alone chalky. Here's an extract from a post of mine circa 10/2001

http://www.magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3009&start=29

Quote:
The argument that we have to get a ruckman and that Everitt or another star ruckman would put us in the top 4 is, in my opinion, without merit.

Firstly, we're going to be in the top 4 anyway - next year. Time for a prediction. Based on our form this season, even in losing matches, I predict that we'll make the four next year with a good chance of a premiership. I know this is early and that we won't be peaking until 2003 at the earliest, but at the moment we have an incredibly youthful, skillfull team who simply don't know that they are not yet good enough to be on top. It's going to be hard to beat.

Secondly, my personal belief is that the ruck is overrated. A ruck at the best of times is just a toss of the coin and noone knows where the ball is going to come out of a contest. This was demonstrated very clearly in the first half of this season. We were beaten in the ruck in all but 2 games, Fremantle (even) and WB, but we still dominated centre clearances - until it fell apart. The ability we showed in those early games was that we could take the ball from the ruck regardless of who won the hit-out and use it to our advantage. How often do you see a ruckman win the hit-out yet see the ball fall straight to an opposition player - frequently.

The real value of a ruckman to us is another marking tall, which, I admit, we could do with.

Unbelievable. 2001?! That is so spooky. Uncanny in your prediction mate.

Do you mean to tell me that posters have been having this circular, endless, tap ruckman debate for over 2 years? lol!
Well, it would seem that it's an argument that cannot be won, no matter the logic one way or the other. But I enjoy the thrust and parry of competitive wits.

I subscribe to the theory that a "personality conflict" is responsible for his departure. He thought Thomas was a crap coach, Thomas heard about it, took it personally, sacked the player, and hence the conflict.

yeah chalky this has been argued over and over again, and you watch we'll get a ruck from somewhere and then it'll be "we need a gun fullback to win games" or whatever. your certainly not alone in thinking that a "tap ruckmen" is over rated its just most of us have banged our heads against the wall long enough. but its fun, and I love talking/reading/hearing about Collingwood.
