he was pretty good Ben Davies, but I'm not sure he was as good as what they clearly made him out to be in on the radio by all accounts.

By no means was he bad but some of his disposals by both hand and foot were not quite on the money.

Upon saying that I'm torn as to who was better, fairly good team performance, everyone stood up at some stages in the game.

Fanning - I thought did well around the ground, his chase down in the last quarter to put the bloke off who was running into an open goal was brilliant. By that stage Fanning was spent but he never gave up and despite barely getting a fingernail onto him the bloke was on the edge of the goalsquare and ended up grubbering it across the face for not even a behind, I laughed my arse off.

Burnsy - was all class, played as you would expect

Illes - was quite early but bobbed up late in the game to get some important possies, a couple of strong contested marks

Stanley - not fantastic but decent number of possesions and moves well, knows how to get to space.

Egan - I thought he played well, hit the ball hard, and took some strong overhead marks on the lead.

C.Cloke - was strong all day, some dodgy kicking into our forward line meant it was never going to be easy but he lead well and stood strong. Did some good work around the ground when he went into the ruck.

J.Anthony - I very much enjoyed his game, a very strong boy indeed. Good hands. The best part I think are his second efforts, never stops trying. Cramped in front of me very late in the game.

Nicholls - he is a dead set goer, make no mistake, probably has more skill than I think but you tend to just focus on the fact he will attack the player and or ball.

B.Hall - Hit the ball hard, looked better up forward. Started on Podsiadly which was a stupid match-up from the start, Hall was never going to keep up with him on the lead. Nothing of note though unfortunately.

J. Cloke - Played his customary role and did well, seemed to me to be moved on to podsiadly when Hall went off him. This made me nervous particularly when Pods, flogged him on the lead a couple of time and turned him inside out another. But finished the game strongly on him and as I think he was actually playing as Podsiadilly's direct opponent for close to a half of footy I'd say maybe honours even.

Pendelbury - Well I've decided to throw an extra carriage onto the Pendelbury express so that all the passengers can jump on when they see him. Oozes class sums it up perfectly, everytime he did something I'd give my family a nudge and say "did you see that, where did he find that space." I like the boy.

When we have those sort of in-form woods-listed players in a Willi side how can they lose against any VFL side? Amazing WErribee kept so close.

Werribee had many Bulldog listed players as well and won by 70pts last week.

Ben Davies was great all day, just knocked up getting touches and kicked the ball very well.

Pendelbury was very good and showed some real dash and poise. His kicking let him downa little at times but it was very windy.

Danny Stanley was great in the second half and helped to shut Werribee out in the last quarter.

Sam Illes struggled to get the ball but his attack on it was magnificent.

Ryan Cook looked to still be finding his feat but like Illes he was hard at the pill.

Danny Nicholls looked promising and definatley doesnt mind putting his head over the ball.

Burns was in everything but seems like he might still be a bit under done. He seemed to really run out of steam in the last quarter.

John Anthony was the highlight of the day for me. He runs straight at it and backs himself in. He was a little loose in the first but come good after quarter time. His kicking was very good and he reads the play well.

This was a high quality game against last year's runners-up; and Andrew Williams simply dominated - mainly in defence. Similar grunt came from Lawry up front and Lloyd in the middle. As a small, the rover Brett Johnson found a fair bit of the ball too.

Of the CFC players:
- Davies - had a lot of touches; probably not enough of them hurt the other team (though he did get a few goals this time). Started on half-back; seemed better when up on the wing or playing a link role or in the centre clearances. Great at finding space to linkup; also great at gruntwork and clearances today. The ball just loves him; pity he doesn't caress it back into the chest of a teammate a bit more often. Best of the CFC mob.

- Burns - clearly a class beyond, but now a yard short (got caught with the ball more than once). Not as many possies as Davies but they seemed to create more damage for us, and great 1%ers down back and in mid to keep Willi in it when Werribee threatened to run away. A master at work.

- Jason Cloke - Podsiadly smashed Hall but was quietened when Jason went on to him. A solid grafting key back game. Same problem remains - where to play him in CFC if he can't do KPP? The obvious answer = loose in defence; not sure that worked this game either. His huge fisting of the ball when third-up meant that sure the ball went 20 metres more away from our goal....but unfortunately more often than not we didn't gain possession of the resultant loose ball; Werribee did and it would just come sailing back past where the previous punch out had happened. Not sure CFC can afford that from defence.

- Cam Cloke - solid at CHF and FF with a few good goals. When allowed to meander around the ground on the ball, he picks his moments to provide grunt and inspire his team. A really solid game. The main downside for a game at CFC was seen in the last quarter where the fullback on him, Wight, ran off him the length of the ground several times to provide an extra Werribee loose man going forward. Cam to his great credit attempted to go the length of the ground with him, but could not keep up. If a VFL team saw something to exploit in Cam's mobility, what about at AFL? Either someone would need to cover for him, or more mobility work required for those huge Cam thighs. Still at this level Cam was clearly amongst the best and most impactful on the ground (but so was Wight, who I'd expect to see in the Bulldogs firsts real soon seeing they have few talls).

- Pendlebury - yeah, do hear the "oozes class" gushing comments. But suggest needs more games at this level to develop his tank so as to best use that class. For the so-called "great evader" he was caught far too often; for a so-called incisive left-foot damaging kicker, he was rushed into too many sloppies. Clearly amongst our best, but before we gush him into CFC, suggest he needs some more time to get over his illness and reduced preparation. On the flip side were things in this game that he perhaps gets less credit for, including a willingness to go inside, tackle and be hard at it; and when he is caught, it is simply uncanny how he seems to have his arms free to be able to dish off effectively. Got lots of ball; not just an outside receiver, though clearly happy in space. Lovely to watch, though I will try to be patient till seeing him on Collingwood's wing soonish.

- Rowe - as opposed to Pendles was more of the outside will-of-the-wisp. Saw his first CFC game against Hawthorn where this talent worked well. But seems to be lacking both confidence and some chasing fitness right now.

- Stanley - though he kicked a goal and roughed a few up earlier on, it was only really in the last quarter that he stood up. Then he was on the half back flank and clearly in a better comfort zone than in the mid. Some of those last stats were easy ones to maintain team possession, but he seems very composed to be able to do that, and several were hard ball gets. We need mids, but Stanley may need time to get there via the early Scott Burns route - take a while at half back; size up the game. Little doubt he'll make it, but probably last part of this year or next.

- Yakka - has it; didn't see enough of it. Long-term unknown. Hope it is just a matter of fitness and restored confidence...but how long can one keep saying that? Best work was in the guts sharking Street's tap outs.

- Egan - back in that "oozes class" category. Just needs to ooze it a bit more often. For his past penance was played down back for first quarter plus a bit...something about developing his defensive game, no doubt. Egan is no defender. When he was forgiven and allowed to roam the forward flanks again, he showed he can play and obviously tried to tackle someone now and then even if only to keep the powers that be happy. An above average work in progress?

- Fanning - who is going to beat beanpole Peter Street to the tap if all else and the ballup is even? Not disgraced there but outdid Street around the ground increasingly as the game went on. Some very deft touches up front and down back; lots of endeavour. It may be a luxury if Davo can stay at this level for a while longer so that he can develop this round-the-ground flair that is emerging, but also have our ruck coaches working on his centre and ball-up tap out techniques (boundaries seemed more even). He is young; gosh there was potential there today that other clubs would....etc etc

- Cook - this kid is a player. Contested, made space, kick finds a teammate, grand mark. Only 17 or upcoming 18 and so watch this space....However, again he was either sent to defence or run down there by his opponent at times..oops goal to Werribee. Hope we let him hone his game up forward for a while before we try to turn him into anything else.

- Anthony - a lot to like. Not sure where he'll be groomed for CFC. Wasn't yet given the "big" job on Podsiadly, but did many grand things in both the "tall and small" back pocket roles. Playing with Williams and Burns around him may have boosted confidence for a good game. Seems to have time to get away the best option disposal; good mark.

- Iles - must have missed him doing his run-with role early on, or he went missing. But last half he marked strongly, barged packs, contested well and kicked at least one goal. Will probably need more time at this level to find his niche, but those critics who said he wasn't a footballer might have seen equivalents to his missing first half rather than what he can do as in the second half.

- Hall - not sure what to say - an athletic tall in search of a position? FB or CHB against Podsiadly certainly wasn't it. Did some nice things elsewhere from time to time, but where does he best create impact on the game? It's probably not yet enough to say "thank you for being here today".

- Nicholls - another who warmed into the game the more it went along. Started on the bench and ended in the guts. The latter is where he belongs. Showed good signs in the centre square, so is not just a pretty forward pocket goalkicker, though it's nice to have that too. Got plenty of the ball; reasonable disposal today. Will probably need the year to develop the centre square side to his game at adult level, but would not surprise if he gets promoted to CFC senior list at year end or next.

- Seconds game: only saw last quarter and a bit, so can't comment well on Toovey and anyone else who was playing there. Notice that big Tex Walker got into the official "bests" for this reserves game, but gee his best must have been well gone before we arrived. He has lost weight, conditioning and confidence from what we saw. A calcium spur removed from his foot is what we'd heard about his injury mid last year; not sure what that entails or perhaps it was something else, but Tex has a long way to get back to CFC from that last quarter performance (which may be unfair, as he may have spent it all in the first 2.5 quarters?).

What depth we are developing. It appears as if a 'squad' of 26-27 is developing to fight it out for the 22 spots.

FYI, On the williamstown site:

http://williamstown.footballvictoria.com.au/default.aspx?s=newsdisplay&aid=105340

Williamstown win Western Surburbs Derby over Werribee

Williamstown made two changes to its side to play Werribee in the Western Suburbs Derby. Scott Burns and Sam Iles came into the side for the promoted Heath Shaw and the unlucky Stephen Brewer who was dropped to the reserves

The first quarter begun with Werribee kicking with a 3-4 goal breeze and they quickly opened their scoring with goals to Podsiadly and Garth. Scott Burns, Scott Pendlebury and Brad Lloyd were lively early and Cameron Cloke was in top form up forward and kicked 3 first quarter goals. Jason Cloke was moved onto the dangerous Podsiadly and Andrew Williams and Heath Lawry were reliable targets up forward. The standard of play was very high and in a high scoring quarter Werribee led by a goal

Quarter Time Score: Williamstown 6.2 (3Cool Werribee 7.2 (44)

Williamstown now had the breeze at their back but it was Werribee who dominated early and scored early goals. Ben Davies was a key player in the quarter and Adam Iacobucci was shadowing Farren Ray in a disciplined manner. Heath Lawry continued his good form and kicked two critical goals to level the scores at half time.

Half Time Score: Williamstown 11.5 (71) Werribee 11.5 (71)

The third quarter opened with Brett Johnson and Scott Pendlebury dominating out of the centre to kick the first two goals against the wind. John Anthony, Rayden Tallis, Sam Iles, Jason Cloke and Andrew Williams were defending stoutly but Werribee rallied late in the quarter to take a one point lead into three quarter time. Dave Fanning was having a great duel with Peter Street and the winner of this duel could guide his side to victory.

Three Quarter Time Score: Williamstown 16.8 (104) Werribee 16.9 (105)

The tense final quarter begun with Werribee refusing to lie down and were intent on maintaining their great winning record at home. Play rebounded between both half back lines before Chris Egan kicked a great mercurial angle goal. Steven Greene, Ben Davies and Danny Nicholls provided plenty of run and young Danny Stanley had an outstanding last quarter. Werribee had their chances to win the game but inaccurate kicking at goal was costly. In the end Williamstown maintained their composure to win by 13 points and record only their second win at Chirnside Park for 15 years.

Full Time Score: Williamstown 20.8 (128) Werribee 17.13 (115)

Goalkickers: Lawry 4 C.Cloke 4 Davies 3 Burns 2 Lloyd 2 Iles 1 Pendlebury 1 Johnson 1 Stanley 1 Egan 1

Best Players: Williams Pendlebury Lawry J.Cloke Burns

Reserves Wrap

Williamstown Reserves continued their great early season form by defeating Werribee by 100 points. Big “Tex” Walker continued his comeback from injury with an impressive display and Alan Toovey showed provided plenty of dash and drive off the half-back line. Kane McKenzie, Liam Picken, David Stretton and Matthew Pearce were the leading ball winners in the midfield and Stephen Brewer pressed his claims to return to the Senior side with a 35 possession game in defence. Ben Clifton and Dean Galea were good up forward and provided mobile marking targets.

Full Time Score: Williamstown 20.17 (137) Werribee 4.13 (37)

Goalkickers: Galea 4 Clifton 3 Picken 2 Dow 2 Stretton 2 McGhie 1 Pearce 1 Toovey 1 Darvell 1 McKenzie 1 Rose 1 Crawford 1

Best Players: McKenzie Walker Clifton Brewer Pearce Stretton

Watch out, tex could be in line for a step up to Willie Snrs. Who will Eddie smiths' "unluckiest player" to be dropped be??
