This was shared on big footy from a poster many believe gets genuine inside info from the club:

Quote:
Just thought I'd provide some info. in relation to Paul Seedsman and his forthcoming departure.

Buckley and Co have always had very high hopes for Seedsman. His line breaking pace and long kicking always appealed to Buckley and provided a point of difference to our other players.

However, Seedsman has no one else to blame but himself for the fact that he is no longer wanted. The club has been warning Seedsman time and time again this year about his off-field behaviour and his off-field lifestyle in general. When he injured his hip again a week or two after anzac day, they warned him not to go out but he refused to listen. They were disappointed that he chose to live a bad lifestyle instead of dedicating himself to getting his body absolutely right in the way a Pendlebury, or of the new-comers, a Scharenberg would.

All year they have had chats to him about his party lifestyle, yet the penny never dropped for Paul. Paul isn't a bad kid but he lives a lifestyle where he is easily influenced by his group of mates who aren't professional footballers and are able to go out a few times a week. His living arrangements (living with his two mates who do the Angry Dad videos) haven't helped and the club has not been happy with his living arrangements.

It got to a point where the club believed they had spoken to Paul and tried to guide him as much as they could that they have now given up. To put it frankly, they believe he has pissed his AFL career up against the wall. What makes it more disappointing is that Paul loved the club as a kid and if he had a more mature head on his shoulders, would have made a success of his career at Collingwood.

Sounds about right to me. It's sad because the kid has a lot of talent. I think also, it must be said that if his lifestyle was an issue, but he was playing great footy, he would probably still have a future with us. Whatever the reason, apart from a great ANZAC day game, his footy this year has been very disappointing.

True or not there are enough other examples to take this line: is this Buckley's major influence on the club? As a player he was supremely talented and many thought before he took over that he'd preference players with real skill unlike MM who was more for the hard working types. What we've seen is that Buckley seems to have an even harder line than Malthouse. Mick valued effort highly but if you were skilled enough he was willing to overlook off-field issues or weaker defensive effort. Not so Buckley. To play for Bucks you need to put in on the field and prepare properly off it. And this fits with Buckley as a player, because even though he was talented it's the work and meticulous preparation that made him such a great of the game.

This exacting standard looks to be causing a greater level of player turnover than is ideal, but once the "problem" players are weeded out it should make for a strong and committed playing group, very much in the Sydney mold. There is however a danger of taking this too far and being too controlling and too closed off to alternative characters. We could maybe say this of Paul Roos who never embraced attack and flair the way his successor in Longmire did. With this in mind it's not surprising, though still disappointing, that Buckley so quickly dismissed the possibility of signing Harley Bennell, but maybe this is the type of chance Buckley needs to be more open to. I get the feeling that he's not going to become a great coach until he loosens these strings slightly.

^^ The fact that Seed had opportunities earlier in the season suggests Bucks isn't as hard lined as that but it appears players who refuse to heed the message eventually run out of chances.

He said it himself this year didn't he about instilling the defensive fundamentals into a group before adding the offensive flair?

Perhaps we haven't got the balance correct and until we do we wont be a top 4 chance.

God knows we are seemingly obsessed with playing new recruits in a defensive position at VFL level outside the odd exception.

How West Coast have performed this season should be our inspiration going into next year.

P.S-I always recall how Burns when asked about Buckley the coach stated he was different to what he imagined he would be.

He didn't really elaborate but I got the impression he Buckley values hard work first over skills and talent.

I don't know. Definitely not putting my view above as unquestionable truth, it's just the sense I get. Even there I'm not saying that we won't play more attacking football. It's less the onfield defensiveness and more the setting of standards away from the club as well as inside that I was getting at. If it is as it looks from the outside, could this become stifling for the players and potentially lead to continued issues? The exacting standard is something that Buckley himself has spoken about. He understands the need to accept different personalities and approaches to the game, but acknowledges this is an understanding he needed to work on both as a player and a coach. This self awareness is a good sign that he won't be stuck with too narrow a view.

On field, I think the way Buckley's gone about developing the side is absolutely correct. Effort and defensive pressure are the cornerstones of a great modern side. We saw last night that the "prettier" elements can look good (as they did last week in Crows v Dogs) but they're not enough for you to seriously challenge. The Dogs and Crows will need to alter their game before they're a real chance, whereas we are playing the game the right way we just need to do it better for longer.

This is where good captaincy comes into it I reckon. A good captain will have a good enough relationship with his playing group to know when the coaches are pushing too hard and a good enough relationship with the coaches to tell them to back off without anyone getting upset.

The whole leadership group would have a role to play here and under Pendles, I reckon we've pretty much got it covered. I've never heard anyone say a bad word about him. All the young professional types want to be him and even larrikins like Swanny and Heater appreciate how good he is. Universal respect.

There's probably an element of truth in that analysis, but I wouldn't make too much of it. After all, Bucks has managed to get the best out of the leader of the ratpack, Swanny. Bucks has said that Swan is a unique character and he admires the way Swanny does it "his way". That doesn't sound like an inflexible coach to me. In return, Swanny says he's loving being coached by Bucks and wants to play on with a contract extension. So, I don't really fall for that robotic view of Bucks. Furthermore, with regards to Bennell, as an outsider, I would love us to recruit him, because he is a brilliant footballer, however, it's very possible/likely that Bucks knows a lot more about this kid than any of us. Bucks may well have got the inside story from Rocket, and believe that this kid is a train wreck. So while I'm disappointed we're not going after Bennell, I'm willing to back Bucks' call. time will tell I guess.
