We coughed a Rd1 (pick 6) for Beams.

Whilst he has been great servant for us, 2010 makes him an immortal, we got dudded big time by the Lions.

The Lions would have known something wasnt right with him.

Stuff it.

Hopefully Beams can do the honourable thing and retire from AFL rather than indefinite leave. This would get his salary off our books. We can then provide him the support he needs.

win - win.

imagine we lose a De Goey, Moore or some other quality player because of our salary cap squeeze whilst Beams is getting payed big bucks to deal with his mental health issues?

That’s when the proverbial will really hit the fan.

We did very well in the deal trading him out.

We did very badly in the deal trading him back in.

Was never worth two first rounders... Age/injuries and a fragile mental state.

What? You can’t spell a premiership player’s name.

Hindsight is the the most accurate of all the sights. Beats foresight most of the time.

Beams was coming off an outstanding 2018 season. We salivated at the prospect of a goal-kicking midfielder being the extra link up in our chain.

The thing about mental illness is that it's not a fixed condition like a broken leg. It can come upon you rapidly, it can leave you temporarily. Like a bad habit it can leave you for a while, then return. You can appear fine to certain groups of people for long periods of time. It can be undetectable to all but the closest of your allies. Lying and deception can be huge parts of it. Self-deception vs resilience is a constant battle.

He might feel great and start training again in a week. I'm sure Collingwood will have some pretty handy doctors workig with him. Public admissions are part [it seems] of the AFL method of cleansing/rehab. We'll see.

From a Collingwood business point of view, the shareholders are angry, disappointed. But those shareholders are fickle. If he rehabilitates successfully and we can some return on investment... things get forgotten quickly if the results come.

Unfortunately though, his mental health has become as fragile as Benny Reid's physical health. Something we here have lost faith in.

Personally, I hope Beamsy regains faith in his own body and mind.

hope he gets better
Wasnt happy with the trade but could see the concept
Another goal kicking mid tag teaming with De Goey would give other teams nightmares

A post of considerable insight and wisdom Cam. Very well expressed IMHO.

Feel the pies were dubbed in the Beams deal Brisbane must be laughing they got 2 1st round picks too I was never a fan of Beams coming back to the pies he should have stayed at Brisbane and we keep the 1st round picks. Poor management on the pies half.

A lot can happen in 4, 5, or 6 months. If things turn around he'd be a handy, physically rejuvenated inclusion, who's had a bruise free year off, for ANZAC day or round 8, etc to cover injuries to Taylor or De Gooooey or Steele etc.

My only gripe on a Beams or a Wells or a Murray is that it’s never absolute

We enter season,s with unsettled issues

Dont ask me how to rectify and eliminate cos I don’t know

And that frustrates the shit out of me

It’s absolute now with Murray and Wells. It’s absolute with all of them, eventually.

To give up two first round draft picks for no return is enough to prevent a premiership tilt. You just cannot afford to be that wasteful, the competition is so close. Clubs strive to gain a 1% edge and we piss away top draft selections. WTF is wrong with this club? Its as if it tries to sabotage its chances sometimes.

The trade was sufficient to get Quaynor with the 1st Round 2018 selection and Kelly with the 2nd round - which we most likely would have done anyway, plus we picked up Beamer.

The 2019 1st rounder still rankles a bit though...
