I hate those last minute loss,s

1964 when big Gabbo gets ball fwd of centre and not one player in front
Runs right up to ten yard (yep that was it then) square and goals

From bounce Neil Crompton follows our rover and flukes a goal-4pt loss

1966 and Ted Potter hand pass goes to a St Cunder player who kicks point
siren and loose by that point

1979 the Harmes ball from out of bounds back into field of play —hand pass to Scum in goal square—loose by 4 and siren soon after

Funny fact a boundry umpire from that day was a master of our year at school....he was not the man on the spot.

This is why I'm bitter and twisted!

In order of pain, for the lost GFs I've been at:

1. 1970 (scarred me for life)

2. 1979 (robbed by the umps)

3. 1981 (3rd GF loss in a row - left me gutted)

4. 2002 (robbed by the umps)

5. 1980 (we were humiliated)

6. 1977 replay (with Carman we'd have won)

7. 2003 (without Pebbles, we were never in it)

8. 2011 (I was still glowing from our 2010 victory)

9. 2018 (beaten by a better side)

10. 1966 (too young to hurt too much)

11. 1964 (see 1966)

I was there in 2018. It hurt. Bad.

I was there in 2011. It was no where near as bad. Personally. I guess winning it the year before helped ease the pain a little bit.

2002 and 2003 feel like so long ago now.

Tough call but for me:

2018 because of how we lost.....dominated and then coughed up the loss a la the Colliwobbles

2003 because we were the dominate side and shat the bed once Pebbles got suspended. We embarrassed ourselves that day.

2011 - bad luck with key injuries at the pointy end and bad selection of said injured players. A bit of shit umpiring too let the Cats score easy goals before 1/2 time.

2011, we should have won that game, best team all year

2003, similar story, best team, had beaten them just a few weeks earlier and question marks over their fitness, that loss hurt as well for how bad we played

2018, never expected we'd make it, didn't expect to win it. West Coast were the best team last season, I don't know how anyone can call it a shock they were there, did they lose a single game that Darling and Kennedy played? If not for those 2 being injured at one stage, they would have finished a couple of games clear on top.

1970. The ultimate devastation
1977. Blew the 3Q lead
1979. Cheated by the scum
1981. Blew another lead and Peter Moore’s injury came home to roost.
2018. Say no more.

Cannot answer this question. They all hurt with a venom that cannot be portrayed in the English language.

The 1901 loss is more annoying than devastating to me, but they all count. (Is it fair that it was played at the Lake Oval?)

In fairness, I was not around for the devastation of the earlier premiership losses. Can only speak from experience

I was going to suggest some more suitable languages, but I have self-censored in fear of accusations of racism.

My lifetime:

1. 2003 = Terrible performance from start to finish. We were rightfully favourites after a convincing prelim win and beating Brisbane in the qualifying final. Massive letdown and I suspected a lot sensed our time at the top was coming to the end, and a rebuild would be required.

2. 2018 = Still feel a sense of shock that we made the Grand Final, but to lose it in the circumstances we did was gut wrenching. Can't get over the fact that it was the biggest GF comeback since 1984 and we led for about 95% of the match.

3. 2011 = A very dominant season had us confident of going back to back, but Geelong were the better side through the whole finals campaign. We were struggling and limped through to the GF after the prelim. I think winning the year before helped numb the pain.

4. 2002 = Sad to lose, but I think every supporter came away proud of how far we came after several torrid years. There was also a sense we'd come back bigger and better the following years so optimism levels were high despite falling short.

2003. I felt proud of the team in 2002 and 2018, because in both cases we'd played in a grand final nobody thought we'd make, and while it was disappointing to have lost such a close game (probably more so in 2018), at least we provided a good contest and left plenty of room for optimism. 2011 was a huge let-down, but the fact we'd won the year before made it much easier to take.

2003, on the other hand, was just a miserable day. That's one grand final that I'll never revisit under any circumstances.

This. I was so sure we were going to win, after a heroic 2002 effort. 2003 was our year. And we collapsed miserably. It makes me burn just thinking about it.

I think you are right Jezza. Last year was actually one of the very worst...even more so than 2011. In 2018, it was like a magic dream, a gorgeous fantasy and yet a reality as well. To just be in that Grand Final was a miracle. To unleash a holocaust in the first quarter was like...well this is the work of the Gods... Jupiter, Thor, Yahweh...all of them are now collaborating to ensure the victory of the Pies. To lose... was a tragedy that brings to mind the dilemma of Hamlet, to be or not to be... almost wavering on the latter...
