I think it would be worth the risk just to see what can be achieved with him as long as it does not cost us too much of the cap and is initially for a limited tenure. You never know, he might be a great improver and balance up the deficit from the Shane WoWoful trade being the last big name player we received from the Demons

No. guys, take away his #1 draft pick tag and he is an ordinary player at best. No accountability, no urgency, no toughness, no second efforts.

He is an ordinary AFL player. I watch plenty of football.

Pass...

Take away the #1 draft pick bit and it sounds like you were describing Varcoe circa 12 months ago.

The Watts to Collingwood thread appears every season.

You'd only look at him if he came cheap like in a straight swap for Seedsman or a 2nd round pick.

Clive Waterhouse, Anthony Banik and Stephen Hooper may contend for this mantle!

Sure it does. The difference this time is that we'd get him for next to nothing. Melbourne weren't interested in trading him before, not unless they got massive overs (a decent player, say, or a first round pick). No way that was worth it.

But for a second-round pick - not ours, we'd have to trade for a late second-round pick - or a fringe player, he'd be worth a punt. You'd take him on a two year contract paying not much, with a big performance bonus. Maybe - maybe - we'd sweeten it with a late pick swap if they insisted. Or maybe not. It's a buyer's market: Watts is a free agent next year, so he can walk for nothing if he wants to. Better for them to get at least something.

Now it sounds as though I'll all-fired keen on getting Watts. Nope. I'm on the fence. I reckon it comes down to personal assessment. Last year, Bucks sat down with Travis Varcoe and they talked for a long time. In the end, Trav wanted to come to Collingwood and Bucks reckoned Varcoe had his head the right way around and was going to succeed at Collingwood. They did the deal and the rest is history.

Same deal for Watts. Let him sit down with Bucks and at the end of it, if Bucks reckons Watts is a genuine goer, and we can get him for a good price, go for it. If Bucks ain't convinced, or if Melbourne want too much, no deal.

Who?

Never heard of any of them.

Which I suppose is your point!

Yes forget the draft pick
In recent times both jimmy clement and Leigh brown came to us as ordinary players with potential .
I would roll the dice and try him if he came cheap , worst case scenario we add him to the list of second chance failures , but if a new environment and urgency ( created by being moved on ) , along with a little less expectation and being a third or forth option in defence / attack , extracted something, then we have a win.
You only need to look at the many second chance players in recent premiership teams to realise this is a chance all clubs take .
At 300k and a second rounder I would do it

You can understand why he went pick 1 originally with his physical attributes of size, speed and skill.

He's very much like Moore in that regard but that's were the similarities end.

Moore has natural courage and is highly competitive two reasons why people are so bullish about his future prospects.

His genes don't hurt either.Wink

I guess we all thought Varcoe was a tad soft before this season so who knows perhaps Bucks could finally unleash a fierce competitive spirit that Watts has lacked till now.

Why would we need Watts?

Offers Nothing to the Club

On ability he'd definitely make our team. People exaggerate how bad he's been, he has played below expectations but he has not been anything like a hopeless case. As a sweeping tall back he wins more disposals then Ben Reid and takes a similar number of marks. He is quick and uses the ball well.

The question is over his "softness" both physically and mentally as well as the baggage he comes with in terms of his own expectations and that of others. These are things for the club to assess but if his/Melbourne's asking price wasn't too high there's no reason not to consider him. He's not a free agent so a trade would need to be worked out.
