Correct me if I am wrong but isn't free agency meant to benefit the player and not the clubs.
They have the power to chose where they want to go?

Exactly right. To stop legal action about restricting choices with employment (restraint of trade).
To have a player choose the AFL club he wants to play for, especially after 10 years at a club, although he can seek to leave after 8 seasons.

Thanks for the clarification.

I agree with what you've said but it was sold to fans as part of equalisation.

Whoever believed that free agency would help equalisation must have been a complete dolt. The only way that works in theory is if you assume a successful team doesn't have as much room in their salary cap but that a bottom team has plenty. Hasn't really been the case. Everyone just nominates Hawthorn or Sydney. If Franklin can get to Sydney who won a premiership a year or two earlier, then nothing is stopping the Hawks. Sad state of affairs. I think we all could see at the time that it was going to destroy the game even further.

Yes go to a successful team and you would have a better chance of being a premiership player.
Why worry about the draft when a whole flock of good proven players are knocking on your door.

Salary cap was the reason. If the Hawks get Dangerfield after winning flags and favourites for this year, then their current team are taking unders.

Good list management yes. But in the interests of the game? I think not. Fitzpatrick will have another spew if it does happen.

Makes me think that the 93% salary cap spend limit needs re-thinking. If brisbane (for example) are paying their list 93% of what the Hawks are paying theirs then there is some dud players on big coin. Clubs at the bottom of the ladder for a period of time should be able to spend less on their list so they've got a war chest to go after elite players. Would Danger go to brisbane for $1.3m a year. Not sure but he'd seriously think about it.

yes. was also theoretically meant to allow mid to lower tier players not getting games to continue their careers elsehwere.
