The measure of any good organisation is keeping one's staff/players on their toes for fear that any misplaced drop in performance has consequences. I think to the following examples in AFL and other:

* Ross Lyon dumping Dal Santo & Milne in 2008
* Minson dropped 3 times this year for Bulldogs
* Shane Watson (finally) for 2nd test match in Ashes recently
* Nick Krygios and Kokinakis for reverse singles in Davis Cup last week
* KP getting the arse from the Poms cricket team

Invariably standards work. Think after 5 losses despite extenuating circumstances a stance must be made at match committee with an eye to rewarding those who deserve an upgrade to the seniors, such as:

* Marsh
* Dwyer
* Scharenberg
* Karnezis
* Young (yes even Young)

Good idea. Let's drop Pendles and Sidebottom.

Good to see the crux of the tread resonated with you!

dude, Buckley made Faz work his ass off for a spot. He wont play Reid unless he proves a spot is warranted. Kennedy and Seedsman are getting canned for not doing their jobs properly.

Do you really think that Buckley isn't setting standards???????

And the crux of your email is that it needs to be a star and that we have never really done it with stars!!!! We don't have many stars and they are all playing really bloody well.

So its hard to have a crux resonate with me when there is no bloody useful crux!!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Not sure where you are taking this post. I think it is more courageous to drop a rookie. You are more likely to be physically attacked. I coached footy years ago and was attacked by the team manager, occasional players, assistant coaches, wives; and more. All because I was a no nonsense coach who did not put up with crap performances and dropped players and sacked officials. Now days every one wants a big hug. We need to coach like I did and you watch the results.

I can't stop laughing at the thought you got attacked by wives!!! Go Sweeny!

.... And their kids ! One of them sank their baby choppers in, amd gave Hiss the first 8-week calf injury encountered while coaching. The flies, the heat, the stench of death, it was all in a day's work....

No mention it had to be a star, did mention "staff/players". So you're correct our elite players are playing very well but time-honoured foot soldiers whose form has declined or waned over time should be under "scrutiny". We all have our views as to who/not these players may be and it's not confined to Buck's whipping boys. There are some that are being played on reputation not effective output.

Given our reasonable depth it should imply that we use it not waste it.

I remember (his then wife) Betty saying in 1978 something to the effect that she'd rather cut off Phil's legs than see him play in the reserves but I'm pretty sure Hafey dropped him that year (God knows, Tommy was silly enough to do that).

I know, I know - Phil's going to turn 65 in a little over a month and I should try to get over Hafey delisting him and then recruiting "No Knees" Edwards but, no, I'm just never going to.

That'll give them the shake up they so richly deserve!
