AFL advises Chris Mayne (quad) has been withdrawn from the Collingwood emergencies for tomorrow's rd2 match v GWS Giants. Sam McLarty replaces him. |
Cox gets rubbed out for a week, Smith does his hammy and now Mayne has a quad injury. Maybe the footy Gods are smiling on us after all.

I reckon we are a real smokey for this one after watching the Hawks replay, a bit more luck and a lot fewer silly errors and we are a fair chance

Don't gloat, it's just a cork. He'll be fine to resume next week against the Blues...

I'm with you. Watched the replay and that last 7 mins in the the second quarter and the missed opportunities (2 goals 7 behinds in the last quarter) cost "us" big time.
The umps missed a sly grab of Grundy by Frawley on the Members wing area that took Grundy out of the contest. This allowed the Hawks ruck to gain possession & clear it to them that ultimately resulted in a goal. Not blaming the umps but that sort of miss (luck) didn't help us and which started a procession of goals to them in red time of the second quater.
The other factor is that Adelaide defeated Richmond by 6 goals, we lost by less than 6 goals last week ergo we are better than Richmond.

Several months ago, I watched the 2013 game vs. GWS at MCG.
Treloar and Adams running around for GWS, and Shaw still playing for us.
Cameron kicked 7 goals, and we only just scraped home in the last quarter.
It did my head in...

Happy with the changes. I don't think Smith should have played last week and it's great to see Scharenberg back. In my view one of Blair or Brown should be in our team and comfortable to give Brown an opportunity. He does need to perform though, no gifting games.
Cox will be a loss. He didn't take the grabs last week but he can do better and is important to our structure. Crocker earns himself another game with a decent performance in round 1, but not sure he's a long term option.
Missing from our first choice forward lineup: Elliott, Fasolo, Cox, Goldsack, Wells, De Goey. Only Reid remains. Let's not pretend that doesn't have an impact. Any team will find it difficult to lose a complete line of players. When the losses are spread out across the team it can be more easily covered, but when it's concentrated in one part of the ground it's tough.
That said, we will be competitive tomorrow, we almost always are under Buckley. The Giants far greater offensive power is going to be the concern. We need to play tough and win the ball in close.
The heat should be on Varcoe and particularly Adams. We need our experienced player stepping up. Taylor though must be playing centre square, he's barely AFL standard anywhere else and we need some toughness in there.

I think we have a suckling pigs chance at a spit roast tomorrow, because I think GWS are a monstrosity of competition fixing and we remain sadly depleted for critical personnel. However, I agree that the Hawthorn loss was nowhere near as bad as it has been painted - a function of some umpiring calls that didnt go our way, plus our going tall under slippery conditions that did not favour Reid and Cox at all.
I expect us to put up a game effort even if it blows out near the end. Assuming we will lose, as I do at this point, I hope above all to see Schaz and Stephenson and Murray and Cal Brown continue to show development.

Roos beat Saints with the two stats that really matter in the modern game.
Contested footy and time in your own forward 50.
It aint aint that hard, win the possession and territory numbers and you usually win the game.
Over to you, team and coach.

Infortuntely, we haven't been able to keep the pill locked inside F50 for Amy meaningful time since buckley took over, which is why selecting forward pressure types seems futile in Buckley's Collingwood.
