The fact is you can't just invade a country and then abandon it. Ironically, this is what many left-wing groups are pushing for at the moment (the withdrawal of American soldiers from Iraq), which shows a similar degree of callousness and short-sightedness.
To be honest, I'm coming to the conclusion that the war in Iraq was a major mistake. Yes, Iraq was a major threat to the western world and was a pretty despicable regime, and in my view they may as well have had WMDs, but you can't just go through the world getting rid of all possibly aggressive nations.
