Gilly gets 69 in 37 balls with 15 fours and equals a world record for a 'keeper and Bing gets Man of the Match.

Gives you an idea how well he bowled!!

Call yourselves a cricket team? From today's Herald-Sun.
By ROBERT CRADDOCK
24jan03

It's a longish article so for highlights, check next post.

AFTER three months, a host of crushing defeats, countless injuries and several false dawns, a shattered England cricket side is back where it started - in disarray.

Just when it was about to head to the World Cup with a sliver of confidence and credibility after their fifth Test victory and some fighting VB Series wins, the English are on the deck again, face down.
The English played last night like a side craving for home, which is precisely what they are.

The players are unimpressed by an England Cricket Board decision not to allow them to return home before the World Cup and if the ECB knows what it is good for its team, it will reverse that decision quickly.

Australia versus England yesterday resembled Australia versus Namibia in the World Cup.

Actually, that is being unfair to Namibia. Over the years Australia has played Bangladesh, Kenya and Scotland in one-day cricket and none of them gave in anywhere near as easily as England last night.

When Australia bowled early, the pitch looked like was about to spit lava at any time.

Brett Lee and Brad Williams made the new ball jump like a golf ball on a trampoline as keeper Adam Gilchrist, often with fingers pointing skywards, took six catches as England was routed for 117 in 41 overs.

Just as debate started to fester about the merits of such a lively pitch, the lion became a lamb when Australia took the crease. When Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden took strike, it was as if the match was transferred from a devilish Headingley seamer to a grassless road in Lahore.

English captain Nasser Hussain set a five-man slip cordon craving similar success, but the men behind the wicket might as well have been in deckchairs.

After only a few balls, the ultra-attacking field looked about as intimidating and appropriate as a boxer wearing pantyhose.

Gilchrist's 28-ball half-century was something to behold.

The English bowlers just kept bowling short to him and he uncorked his rasping square drive with shuddering power.

Andrew Caddick was spanked for four fours in succession and even tried bowling from 1m behind the crease, but no trick could fool Gilchrist and that ball went for four as well.

Gilchrist averaged a boundary every 2.5 balls and the crowd soon became spoilt and were satisfied with nothing less.

In one of the final overs, Hayden blocked two balls in a row and the crowd jeered as if he had just played out 10 maidens in succession. Hayden rocked back his head and laughed. When Hayden was dropped by keeper Alec Stewart next ball, the crowd chuckled again as several English fieldsmen ruefully held their arms aloft. It was as if they were thinking: "Gosh, that miss could turn the whole game."

When the match ended at 7.27pm, there was still fading sunlight caressing the SCG.

The temptation is to describe the match as a complete dud, but in a way it wasn't because it was so bizarre.

In the same way as a three-round knockout can be thrilling in boxing, this was absorbing in a comical, short-fused, explosive sort of way.

But in another way it was sad.

Beneath the scorn which has been heaped on England by Australian fans this summer lies a fondness for the old enemy and the hope they will return to former glory. Cricket is longing for the gap between Australia and England to close.

But for now, it seems an almighty chasm.

Gilly was blasting ball after ball to the boundary and the commentator says,"The next ball from Anderson is outside off... and SMASHED away for four .. NO! .. brilliantly fielded by Collingwood in the covers! The crowd boos."

Tim Lane pipes up,"It's not the first time Collingwood's been booed at the SCG. Hahaha.." Ho hum, Tim.

"enjoy what game, there was hardly a game last night,it finished at 7.30pm or so,the openers carting the poms right around the bloody ground,if the poms continue that sort of performance, they are no contest for us,or for anyone in the world cup"

Bryan, I moved your above comment to this topic as it is more appropriate here. Regards

39,000 people saw the first final and paid over $1.5 million! Thats a record gate take for a one-dayer.

It's around 47 degrees out in the middle of the MCG today so you can expect the team who wins the toss to bat!

Ponting does the right thing and wins the toss. Australia will bat and have the same lineup as in the first final. Maher is 12th. man.

Flintoff is in for England. He replaces Hoggard.

A slightly greyer Andy Caddick has the hint of a smile on his face after completing a maiden to Gilchrist. Lol.

Great win to the Aussies! Excellent game.

The story was told in each team's last 10 overs. Australia: 2/86. England: 5/50.

Brett Lee's performance was magnificent, claiming both openers and blasting out Flintoff, Blackwell and Caddick at the death. He was justifiably named player of the match and the final series.

Warney took two vital wickets, Vaughan (60) and Stewart (60), in his final one-dayer for Oz in Australia.

Hayden (69) held the innings together as wickets fell around him and Hogg's knock was full of class. His 71 n.o. from 77 balls really made a big difference as things panned out.

BJ says:

How significant was Andrew Symonds "Save" of that 6 that would have been hit by Nasser. They took one run instead and the Aussies won by 5 in the end.

If he had taken the catch instead of tossing it back in the field, it would have been 6!

He didn't have a great day with the bat, but his fielding was great.
