By Lonie's age Wright had already kicked a bag of 6 goals on Gary Ayres and played a number of 4 quarter games up forward and on the ball. Lonie isn't nearly as good as Wright unfortunately and he struggles with the ball on the deck.

Use him as a running receiver and deliverer or trade him.

Definitely worth keeping - would have to be a damn good trade.

I tend to agree 3rd but we don't have many that others want and he'd be one. I'm really starting to worry Lonie, Cole, Didak, Fraser and a few other don't have enough upside and too many flaws to ever make us a premiership team.

Unfortunately that Ben Kinnear Theory will see us languish at the bottom of the ladder forever. You have to make a call way before that. Unfortunately we wait until we and therefore everyone else knows for certain the player is worthless. The only time we get a decent trade is when we give up real quality. Sanderson, Williams and Schauble have won 4 club B&F's between them. For all of that we got Clement who has won one with us and Holland.

Look at how Essendon do it. For years they have shown their second tier players to advantage and used them in a way so as to limit the damage from their deficiencies. Then they often get a good trade for them. Remember Ricky O? Danny Jacobs in more recent times was a swifty pulled on Hawthorn? Freo got rolled early days. Heffernan and Blumfield?

Maybe you have a point there Mark. Although they did get us very close in 2003, you may have touched on something interesting. Do we make the hard decisions? Trade Lones, Fraser, Neon, Dids, R.Shaw and Cole for a few superstars or keep them in hope?

I'd personally take the latter, but we can not let this door shut on us. We have a window of oppotunity that may well be closing. We have two years to keep it open.

Geez, its an interesting point. I think we've tended to hold on too long in the past, but then I think Daks, Josh & Neon are already quality players. I feel like the only way to get really great players nowadays is to pick up a couple of wooden spoons. The real young guns of the competition lately have shown their quality from season 1 - Aaron Davey, Daniel Wells, Ash Sampi, Chris Judd, Jared Rivers, Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball, Matty Pavlich, Steven Milne, and on & on it goes.

We have a policy of shepherding & developing young players slowly at Willy. Where has this got us? We do it either to develop players or to shield their young bodies from the rigours of the ones. What's the result? No brilliant young players shaking the football world & an injury list a mile long. Whats the point?

I see no point in dumping 'nearly there' players. They'll just show up at StKilda or Carlton & kick our arses, as McGough & Scotland will do this year. I think the thing to do is to persist with the Lonies, Davis's, Coles, Frasers, & Didaks, we simply cant afford to lose them, we have no replacements for them. What we need to do is lay it on the line to the Walkers, Maxwells, Clokes (not Jason), Fannings, Kings, Rowes, & Shaws etc.: Show something this season, something bloody impressive, on a regular basis, or seeya later. Earn the right to play alongside guys like Bucks, Scotty, Licca, & Jimmy, or lose the opportunity.

I think that given this sort of wake up call several of them, (I'm guessing Rowe, Fanning, C2,) will take the next step, and become great footballers. If that doesnt lift the 'serial duds', nothing will. Of course there are circumstances, some of these guys have been plagued by injury & need to be looked after (Collingwood simply doesnt look after its people well enough), but if someone like Guy or Morrison gets free of injury within the first half of the season, tell him he's got the rest of the season to become a Judd, Pavlich, or Riewoldt. (or at least something like where those guys were after 1 season). (Opportunities permitting, of course)

Another special case is Rhyce. I know he's considered a dud by many here, but I've got a soft spot for the guy. He's capable of absolute brilliance on occassion, and his game after Bobby Rose's passing made me very proud. His faults are mental ones, they need to be tackled by specialists in this field.

I still think we are going to get standout seasons from Daks, Cheesy, & Lones, and if Cara proves as useful as Chad has already (and the injury gods smile) we could be in for a season to remember. But if we do it'll be because of another display of sheer guts & tenacity like '02/'03. But we seriously need some brilliance. We need a Bucks, a Daics, a Millane, or put another way we need a Judd, Sampi, or Wells. Daks is the only guy I see making that grade. (I'm talking about a team lifting mercurial player, not solid, reliable woirkers like Scotty & Jimmy - you need BOTH types to win flags, ask Hird, Voss, & Carey)Where are these guys gonna come from? Certainly not from the 'keep 'em at Willy till they're 40' policy.

We need to recruit much better as we dont have the trade bait to pick up an established superstar without giving up half our list. Who would another team want for say, a Daniel Wells? They'd want a Johnno, Clokey, or Taz. Where the hell would we be without them?

Get yer arse in front of goals & kick 50 Tex. Theres no other way.

I totally agree, Lonie is being wasted down back. He is a natural wingman who could be used up in half forward because of his accurate - and long - kicking. I keep getting frustrated with MM for just this reason.

35forever, You did not put serial duds and Rhyce Shaw in the same line.

Agressive strong players are not made they are born. Under the father and son rule which we have taken advantage is for all to see. Ryhce & Heath. Similar to Ray. Brayden is Like Tony but can run faster and kick longer. The Clokes are all like their dad and have a go, read the ball and play well and will stand up for themselves.

Lonie is Lonie and I would compare him to Scott Russell not Graeme Wright

Lones:

Upside: Good pace, beautiful kick, runs through the lines, decent height. Highlight, has to be the two or three bounce run through the middle and the 50 meter + bomb goal.

Downside: Struggles to get into and stay in the game, can get done cold one on one/body on body, can struggle overhead at times. Biggest weakness perhaps being that he is very poor at handling the ball below his knees. Lacks a bit of intensity.

Summary: Looks like he could be a champion/match-winner at times and then fails to have an impact for large slices of games, sometimes for several weeks. After a stunning finals series in 2002 Lones hasn't really gone on with it, seems to have remained at the same level. As part of that second tier group in terms of games and maturity we desperately needed him to take his game to another level last year but Ryan was unable to deliver, he was not alone.

Good player that will need to spend every waking moment on the rebounder, learning how to handle the ball on the ground if he is ever to make it as a wingman. Still see him as a dashing HBF in the Andrew Ireland mould for mine.

Do the positives outweigh the negatives? Yes. The only factors weighing him down are consistancy and intensity - although the latter seems to be returning (from 2001). There are also the signs that his consistancy has returned, with some good performances in the Wizard Cup. But this is it for Lones, make or break. I would hate to see him snapped up by another club, and then do an Aaron Fiora and star. Fiora will be an All-Australian this season, mark my words. Lonie could do the same.

Yeah, hasnt Fiora looked good! I think the Kangas will be very happy with Thompson too.

I know its only 2 Wizzo games, but I really like the way Lones has looked. He seems harder at the ball, and appears to have bulked up a smidge. Hafta agree with the highlight - that run from the back 50 to goal from 60 out was one of the highlights for the whole team in the last couple of years - that & Johnno's goalsquare tackle on Burgoyne in the '02 final.

Post subject: Welcome to Collingwood / Farewell #3 Ryan LonieReply with quote

Ryan Lonie
Jumper: #3
Age: 23
Games: 118
Born: March 4, 1983
Origin: Dandenong Stingrays
Height: 190cm
Weight: 87kg
Position: Defender, Midfield
Player Hounours: Best first year player 2001, AFL Rising Star nominee 2001
Brownlow Medal: 2006 votes 1; career votes 1
Draft history: Selected by Collingwood with the 34th pick in 2000 national draft
Video: Arrow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea-9y_hZFmc

In 2006 Ryan improved on all of his career high stats excluding goals. This achievement shows a marked improvement in his output. Mick Malthouse has seen Ryan as a key part of the defense line up with and ability to provide run off half back. In 2006 Ryan was given many tough jobs, most of which he succeeded. The one that sticks out in my mind would be round 12 when he was given the assignment of containing Swan gun duel brownlow medalist Adam Goodes. Ryan lined up side by side in the middle of the ground and gave Goodes an absolute toweling, not just holding Goodes to just 3 first qtr possessions but also running off him kicking two of his trademark long goals, and also setting up two other attempts on goal. Ryans season and career high possession match was against Hawthorn in round 2, he amassed 28 disps (16 kicks 12 hballs), 4 marks, 6 tackles and a goal. The big flaw in Ryans game is that he is too easily dragged to the full-back. This was evident in the Elimination final where he was dominated by Monty. Playing all 23 games in 2006 he is fast becoming an integral part of Magpies team. 2006 was the year that Malthouse taught Ryan a defensive attitude and which further benefit his claim to becoming a midfielder.

Ryans greatest weapon is most definitely his long left foot kicking., accurate goal kicking and his speed. When he applies himself he is a very tough player to match up on.

Season Highlights

26 disps (14 kicks 12 hballs), 9 marks and a goal in Round 21 44-point win over Carlton at the MCG (27 Aug 2006)

20 disps (11 kicks 9 hballs), 8 marks and a goal in Round 18 4-point loss to Adelaide at Football Park (5 Aug 2006)

23 disps (17 kicks 6 hballs), 10 marks and 2 goals in Round 12 13-point win over Sydney at Stadium Australia (24 Jun 2006)

20 disps (15 kicks 5 hballs), 8 marks and a goal in Round 10 26-point win over Brisbane at the MCG (3 Jun 2006)

23 disps (18 kicks 5 hballs) and 8 marks in Round 8 102-point win over Geelong at the MCG (20 May 2006)

28 disps (16 kicks 12 hballs), 4 marks, 6 tackles and a goal in Round 2 35-point win over Hawthorn at Docklands Stadium (9 Apr 2006)

23 disps (13 kicks 10 hballs), 5 marks, 5 tackles and a goal in Round 1 34-point loss to Adelaide at Docklands Stadium (3 Apr 2006)

2007 will see him attempt to gain that elusive midfield spot which he is so dearly after.

A bout of OP is keeping ryan out at the moment, he will return more than likely after the anzac day clash. As we all know OP is a nasty injury so i wish him all the best and hopefully he can get abck to those long racking goals in the near future.
