I'll have to check those batsmen's Ponting Scores to see what grade they get on the Ponting Criterion.*
(But what is the ICC ratings period? i.e. how far back does it go?)
* Well, Finch & Maxwell have already been given A+, over their whole careers so far. |

Babar Azam
Ave. 50.17 SR 127.49.
Grade (on Ponting Criterion): A.
Babar's ODI stats are shockingly good:
Ave. 54.17 SR 87.08.
Test stats not so good: Ave. 35.28.
(Look at the "Poms skittled for 85" thread for discussion on the death of Test batting worldwide. One of the people quoted in that thread observes elsewhere that in the "good old days", ODI and Test batting averages were highly correlated.) |

Finch is well ahead of Babar on the Entirely Spurious And Quite Indefensible Ponting Criteria - his index is a whisker under 200. Maxy is also on 195 on the ESAQIPC. Munro and Malan are both spuds but they also have high ESAQIPC ratings. Possibly that is because they play most of their T20 international games on grounds smaller than my lounge room (eg, the hilarious New Zealand grounds their countries have been playing on in recent days, where an uppish forward defensive prod is likely to clear the rope on the straight boundary).
Also, i note that Ricky’s career rating on the ESAQIPC is 161.4. I wouldn’t pick any of those top 5 players (including Maxwell, who is my favourite batsman) ahead of playing-age Ponting in a T20 international, even though their “ratings” are all miles better than his. |
