Ex leader of the ACTU and ex Prime Minister Bob Hawke has died aged 89.

A giant of the Labour Movement and giant of Australian political life

Vale Bob Hawke

yeah... why cant he take F$%%^ng Paul Keating with him; sick of paying taxes for politicians pensions who I voted out of office 20 years ago .

so far tonight I've had 2 robocalls, 5 political pamphlets in the mail box and an endless stream of political advertising that has convinced me not to vote for any cheese-ball who has inflicted political advertising on me.

well looks like John Hepworth was right to stick the boot into Bob Menzies when he died. Not that I personally wish to say anything about him.

OK Labor let's do it for Hawkie.

As for the righties, the less said the better.

For the current lot, as my old uni lecturer said about poets:

As a bloke he wasn't perfect, but few people are (me and P4S obvious exceptions)

As a Prime Minister, he'd be in the top few we've had of any colour.

Vale Hawkey.

Vale Bob Hawke

As a nurse in the public health system I applaud and am very grateful for your reinstatement of Medicare in 1984!

My Dad was in the class behind him at Perth Modern school. Dad had to fly to perth from Essendon airport circa 1970 and Dad dropped into the John Curtin for a few beers and Bob was there and they got talking and more beers. . Dad realised he would probably miss his flight. Bob grabbed the phone from behind the bar and rang Ansett and held the flight and Dad didn't bother with checked baggage and a boarding ticket , it was all done.

He also got a horse trainers licence for a woman whose husband (but estranged) also had a licence. he personally rang the VRC even though he didn't know he hated women being treated unfairly.

This topic is about Bob Hawke. If you wish to make a comment about Keating or politicans start your own thread; knock your self out.

Despite the foul things written in similar threads about conservative politicians it's not really cool to launch into rebukes about someone who's just passed away. There was time for that while he was alive and there'll be plenty of time for it in the wash up, but for now try and show some respect.

One of Australia's great Prime Ministers, I was only a kid when he was in but he was such a larger than life figure that he still resonates with me more than even Howard who was there for even longer. He led Labor when they were still the workers party and stood for something worthwhile, Australia could do with politicians of his ilk and not the bland, faceless men and simpering latte sipping city elites that Labor throws up these days.
