https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-04-17/midseason-rookie-draft-who-will-be-the-next-tim-kelly-or-kane-lambert

Quote:
COLLINGWOOD:

Mid-season availabilities: One spot (Lynden Dunn ACL)
What they need: Key defender
Filled to March 15:Nil

If it wasn't for recruiting Jordan Roughead, the Pies would be in serious pain in their key posts. With Dunn sidelined for the rest of the season, the Pies' first port of call will be to find extra cover for Roughead and Darcy Moore on the road to September. First-year defender Will Kelly is still recovering from an ankle injury, while Tyson Goldsack remains in the conversation as a forward. Sam Murray's position is still up in the air and, should a finding on his ASADA investigation be given in the next six weeks, the Pies could gain an extra Mid-Season Rookie Draft selection.

We currently have one pick, but could have 2 depending if Murray is given the arse or not.

Interesting that a few ex-pies are on this list:

Quote:
Corey Gault – Swan Districts (WAFL)
26yo, 200cm, 100kg
Three years since he was last on Collingwood's AFL list, looms as a readymade forward/ruck option.

Jye Bolton – Claremont (WAFL)
27yo, 187cm, 84kg
Fresh off his second Sandover Medal as the WAFL's best and fairest, the former Pie has averaged 36 disposals to start 2019.

Nathan Freeman – Frankston (VFL)
23yo, 183cm, 85kg
Delisted by St Kilda at the end of 2018, Freeman had interest from Gold Coast before moving to the VFL where he has dominated in his first two games.

Sam McLarty – Williamstown (VFL)
20yo, 198cm, 96kg
Cut from the Pies after two seasons, trialled at Sydney on the eve of the SSP closure before being overlooked in favour of Hayden McLean.

Ben Kennedy – Williamstown (VFL)
25yo, 176cm, 81kg
Played mostly as a midfielder for Collingwood and Melbourne, but has transformed into a goalsneak after Ben Cavarra and Lachie Schultz were drafted last year.

And one of our VFL players:

Quote:
Campbell Hustwaite – Collingwood (VFL)
18yo, 184cm, 78kg
Co-captain of Dandenong's under-18 side last year, has crossed to Collingwood's VFL outfit after being overlooked as a rookie selection.

Have a scroll through the listed top 50 and see what you think..... (I noticed Adam Tipungwuti there).

Gault wouldn't be bad - I thought he may have been something and was disappointed when he left. He had a few good moments and may pick up training with the pies quicker.

Laughing Laughing naturally

I still liked him. Had some really good glimpses into his ability.

Different players take different times to develop and that's often what they say about about Ruckman.

Overall though I'd like someone with real pace who can kick accurately over 50 & has great goal sense who can ruck, rove, play tall and short as well as play a KP.

Another ex-pie amongst that 50. The number of ex-pies mentioned arguably shows our talent ID was okay, but for one reason or another the players couldn't take the next step.

Quote:
Michael Manteit – Southport (NEAFL)
22yo, 189cm, 85kg
The former rookie-listed Magpie claimed the Sharks' best and fairest in their premiership-winning 2018 campaign and made the NEAFL Team of the Year.

yes, our talent id is so good that we have a bunch of first round draft picks trying to get on a list in a mid year draft as the 46th player having failed to do so by regular means.

We must be the envy of all recruiters....

No idea about any of these, really. I wouldn't be looking at a tall though. Let's take a shot at Cody Hirst. We need pace and run more than we need height.

Need to pick a big bloke for up forward. Reid cannot be relied upon. If Grundy gets injured Mason surely goes first Ruck (ahead of Lynch) and that only leaves Mihocek up there with height, notwithstanding the double Irish experiments.

Our selection will be based on what happens to Murray and who is still injured and the time frame involved in those injuries
For mine right now a lot will dead on Scharenberg
He should be back on the field around that time but he will have a handle with care sign attached
If he's back and getting game time even in the VFL then our needs change
If he's not back then our selection needs change again
Right now I would be looking for the qucikest player available with a mature body and no injury history
If there isn't anyone who fits that bill then the best player over 195cm who's the best kick with a mature body and can play either end

If there isn't any of the above 2 then the biggest mature body clearance beast available

I really think this was brought in post Nicnat etc. Oh we need a ruckman because we lost one. Clubs like Hawthorn who poach other clubs rucks after they put 3 or 4 years into them. I don;t think we need a hard boy medium sized payer when we have Daicos and Sier to come in. I really don't like the idea. But if we must get a break glass type player.

Anyone remember when our injuries were so bad in the 80s we got blokes like Gordon Towan to fill in.

If you have noone on your rookie list (or VFL) worth looking at then the recruiters need a kick in the pants. Someone like Adam Oxley would be ok for us because he knows our system, is there and has friends. getting some muppet from interstate who will probably play VFL and then go back might cost that player a premiership or league best and fairest.
