When defenders mark or receive a free kick within nine metres of their own goal, the man on the mark will be brought in line with the top of the goalsquare.

Does this mean what I think?!
If they mark it on the boundary they'll be brought round to dead in front? Tell me thats NOT what it means?! This is such an obvious bid for higher scores to suit the foreign markets, & completely changes the look of our game!
...

That's NOT what it means. True. It's for defenders. It means if they mark close to their own goal, they have space to kick it over the man on the mark, because the man on the mark has to be 9 metres out. At the moment, if they mark right near the goal line, they are really cramped, because the man on the mark stands right where they marked the ball.

Thank Baby Jesus for that! Thanks for clearing that up Rude, now I actually like the rule, but still, so many big changes all at once? Why?
What don't we know?

It's possible that they drop the most controversial suggestions (e.g. 18m goal-squares) so fans are more accepting of the most controversial suggestion they adopt (6-6-6), and then they sweep in lots of minor changes, hoping these will largely be overlooked because the biggest change gets all the attention. On the other hand, in that video on the previous page, S. Hocking claimed to be "excited" about just about everything. (Irrelevant thought: I didn't realize before that he and his brother are estranged.)

Competition Committee open to wildcard finals round

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-11-21/wildcard-finals-round-receives-support-from-competition-committee

"The prospect of a wildcard play-off round over the pre-finals bye weekend received general support from the committee, although the timing of this possible fixture change remains unclear.

If introduced, the wildcard round would consist of two knockout games between the teams ranked seven and 10 and eight and nine for the final two spots in the existing four-week finals series.

However, there were mixed views among the Competition Committee's members on whether a red-card rule ... would work effectively in the AFL.
...

Other matters discussed included stricter penalties for intentional strikes and the use of studs in marking contests, along with player movement and next year's reintroduction of a mid-season draft."

Red card on amber but AFL keen to get tough on punching

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/red-card-on-amber-but-afl-keen-to-get-tough-on-punching-20181122-p50hoz.html

"Although the introduction of a red card is considered unlikely as early as 2019 there is an expectation that the review will lead to stronger measures being introduced to deter players from engaging in low level offences that may escalate into major incidents if unchecked.
...

Fairfax Media understands the committee was divided on when a red card was necessary, with several incidents being shown and debated as to whether they would warrant the offending player being sent off.

Although it's unclear exactly what incidents were shown to the competition committee, the AFL football operations department asked media at a post-season briefing to view incidents such as Tomas Bugg striking Callum Mills, Nathan Brown bumping Adam Saad and Jeremy Cameron flattening Harris Andrews and give feedback as to whether a red card was necessary."

AFL tightens new six-six-six rule with a 50m penalty

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-tightens-new-six-six-six-rule-with-a-50m-penalty-20181206-p50kqp.html

"Under the AFL's new six-six-six rule, teams that seek to protect a lead by placing multiple extra players behind the ball to protect a lead late in the game will concede a 50m penalty in addition to a free kick.

The addition of the 50m penalty will be included as part of the rule to prevent teams from deliberately conceding the free but still positioning themselves - with extra players in defence - so that the opposition finds it harder to score.
...

The AFL has also suggested to clubs that, early on, players will be given some time to get into position before the centre bounce, as they adjust to the new formation.

Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood, Greater Western Sydney, Geelong and the Swans are among the clubs to have been briefed on the rules by the AFL's game analysis unit, headed by ex-Hawthorn assistant David Rath.

The AFL hopes the new kick-in rule - which allows the kicker to run straight out of the goal square without kicking to himself - will give defending teams more options by enlarging the field they can move the ball into. The AFL has been concerned that teams have found it increasingly difficult to move the ball from defence and score, due to the prevalence of zones and defensive formations."

I quite like the 6-6-6 rule, but reading the further implications of the law, I'm hoping a 20 minute quarter doesn't turn into an hour wank fest like the NFL.

AFL confirms change to bump rule, cracks down on niggles

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-confirms-change-to-bump-rule-cracks-down-on-niggles-20181210-p50ld7.html

"The change - or reversion in the rules - would also see a player held responsible, for example, if the opponent he elected to bump made forceful contact with the turf and was concussed."

doesn't this new kick in rule essentially make the goal square redundant (i guess it would still be the moment that the umpire would call play on.

I can see a player pretending like he is going to kick and then running through the line. The guy on the mark will need to be on his toes like never before. Quicker players may be able to develop a specialty here. Wouldnt be surprised to see the emergence of two players standing the mark (on each corner to make sure the quicker player doesn't end up running 30 yards.

Can’t happen quick enough. Anything that discourages gutless, cowardly acts can’t be a bad thing.

I wouldn't want to be first player who slips and gets caught because it will probably be a simple goal. Any smartarse reactions from tacticians on this like 2 on different marks and it will back to the drawing board . The other danger is the defender running too far and again a simple goal.

Nah you've still got the mark in the goal square letting you shoot from straight in front

I hope the next one is something to do with Dusty Martin pushing with one hand and unseen player comes in and slings him to the ground and dislocates his shoulder and he his pinged for holding or dropping the ball, Twisted Evil
