Post subject: This year’s delistingsReply with quote

I know its early to bring this up, but we will need to delist/trade 3 and maybe 4 if we get Lynch.
Plus do we need to update rookies Appleby and Mihocek ?
This is first time in years that we have such a dilemna - no one retiring and no obvious players to let go.
Possibles - Blair, Goldsack, Kirby (rookie list) Broomhead ?

Here are the main candidates, I think:

Retire: Blair, Goldsack (?), Kirby, Reid (?), Wells (?)
Delist: Broomhead (?), Oxley, Smith, Wills (?)

I love Blair, but he’s clearly out of favour. Oxley and Smith were probably lucky to be kept on last year, and even though the latter has struggled with injury, I’d be surprised if he was kept on. Most new players who aren’t project players or suffering from long-term injuries usually get two years to prove themselves, and you’d think Wills might have missed his chance. Broomhead would be unlucky, but even if not injured you’d have to think he’d be a fair way back in the pecking order now. As for Goldsack, Reid and Wells, the clock is ticking and injuries haven’t helped – I expect at least a couple of those will hang up the boots (maybe Goldsack will go around one more time?)

I can see a few others who might be trade bait (Fasolo, Crocker), but I think most others are safe for now.

Seems Reid is already contracted for another year. Same goes for Wells.

Players to be considered for delisting/trading would be:

Oxley
Smith
Blair
Wills
Goldy
Fasolo
Kirby

Unfortunately, none of those players would be on big salaries, meaning it's going to be difficult to make salary cap space for a Lynch or May. Having to pay over $500,000 again for Wells is disastrous. At least Mayne has provided some value for us, even if he is probably overpaid.

The easiest way to see who the club is planning on delisting, trading or sending to rookie list is to see who's uncontracted
I have a feeling Goldie will be kept around for 1 more season for insurance
Wills is likley to be retained as well
Faz is likley trade
Oxley Smith Blair seem odds on to be delisted at best they could hope for is a rookie spot
We would still need to find at least 1 more at a minimum to fulfil our requirements for drafting ?
So who's left uncontracted

It’s not unheard of for contracted players to retire / be delisted, is it?

Wells must 'retire'.

Wells and Reid are unlikely to retire if contracted so we may as well assume that money is in the cap.

I believe Fas is an unrestricted FA so he won’t be a trade if he goes.

I see value for both Goldsack and Blair as depth players if they are prepared to primarily play VFL and take minimum salary.

Oxley and Smith seem certain delisting. The required third spot for drafting may be determined by trade opportunities. Failing that, it is probably Blair.

From the rookie list, Oxley would seem most likely to go, much as I like him.

I'd think Magden and Lynch might get another year, but never know.

From the senior list, I love Fas but he's a free agent so if we think he's not required we can just let him go. I'd prefer to keep him.

Kirby seems likely to go, maybe Crocker (I'd prefer Fas anyday) and Blair.

If Wells is still contracted, I'd prefer to pay him out to create space for a draft pick. Maybe we could trade him to the Suns and pay some of his salary. They desperately need experience.

Goldie I'd keep. I don't see a spot for him in our starting 18 with a fit list, but he's the ultimate swing man on the bench.

I think Reid, Wills and Wells have another year

But I think
We have Kirby, Blair ( offer him or Goldy Cataincy of the magoos and not be disrespectful to the current Capt of the Magoos) unfortunately it is Time for Goldy and the Ox
And the fourth is either Varcoe or Wells
Maybe offer Broomy a rookie spot

But when you see how good Brody number 2 and Apples have been for us rookie spots must be viewed as very important
And I really like the way Lynch has come on in the magoos this year so he must be retained.

Don't be surprised if we trade one or two players as well. I would suggest Broom, Oxley and Blair are going. Add I reckon we will trade two players.

Reid yes, done in the Ned era. But Wells...? The tentative conclusion in the Wells thread was that there was a games-played trigger clause, which he has now failed to meet.

Contracted:

1. Crocker: has 1 more year, inexplicably
2. Wills: 1 more year
3. Reid: re-signed 6 week’s ago for 1 more year: staggering
4. Lynch: re-signed 6 week’s ago for 1 more year: handy back up

In trouble:

5. Fasolo: free agent, would love to get back into 2nd round of draft
6. Oxley: out of favour and unlikely to be retained
7. Blair: time
8. Goldsack: May be squeezed out
9. Broomhead: in favour of rookie listing him for 2019. Thomas’ development this year hurts his prospects
10. Magden: likely to be squeezed out

Interesting decisions:

10. Wells: hopefully he had a games trigger, needs to retire
11 Greenwood: has a lot of fans on Nick’s but his $450,000 wage should be halved if retained.
12. Appleby: limited ability despite shutting down small forwards, I’d let go

Automatic:

13. Mihocek: to be upgraded

Make room:

14. Quaynor: likely to be selected
15. W. Kelly: likely to be taken father/son

Sounds like Wells will be seeing out his contract next year.

Well, in that case, let's hope this wonderful player can get his body right for 2019. I wonder how many games he'd need to play next year before the club considers the deal to have been a success?
