I may well be one of those who just views and moves on. Not too welcoming suggesting that what has always been an open forum should perhaps become a closed shop. That sort of notion makes me want to post even less as I feel I'm simply intruding. |
That's a shame if so. Skids' proposal – which, as Stui points out, has been pretty roundly rejected so far – would only make the VPT invisible to non-members of Nick's BB; it'd still be available to all other board members, including those who rarely (or, for that matter, never) post. I understand that it might be more the sentiment of the thing that rankles, though; if so, that's just one more reason to keep the forum open.
By the way, SP, for what it's worth I've always enjoyed your posts, and would be disappointed if you or other less regular posters felt uncomfortable visiting or contributing. I like to think we're a welcoming crowd, eccentricities aside! _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I think we should do it. It would be exciting and different. I've never belonged to a clised forum before. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

What Bored Board?
I sent a PM to a certain moderator Who Shall Not Be Named requesting admission but he couldn't be bothered replying.
And I couldn't be bothered following it up because ... well ... I was bored. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

A thread worth revisiting...
The question is, do we know anything about who all the guests are? (This is a question that has arisen in the GD forum, too, in the past.) There are at least a few possibilities for who the bulk of the guests might be... |

Does it matter? I’m not particularly fussed who reads this... _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Well, it must matter to at least some people, or else (for starters) this thread would not exist.
Taking a different tack, I'd say whether it matters may depend on the answer to the question... which, I guess, means it does matter. |

No, the poll is a vote on a proposed solution, really, not on whether they share the concerns of the OP. They are just voting that the solution is bad. (And perhaps they also became confused and disoriented upon seeing the word "clised" in the poll question.)
I guess I'm redefining the "thread topic", as taken literally, but you know what I mean... I'd then generalize that a bit (in ways I should perhaps specify later...).
I mean, there are several different issues, esp. GD vs. VPT.
e.g. in the last GD thread on this sort of thing:
1] "Meanwhile there are 164 guests who are just cruising these pages.
I say to you join up!"
2] "if you got nothing to say, then say nothing at all
but if you do?
then sign up....damn it!"
3] "I thought a lot of the guests where bots or search engine crawlers."
4] "Cruising Trolls from other clubs, some of em ??"

As covered on page 1, a lot of members don't bother logging in until they want to say something, so they're shown as guests. |

^ True. That was also mentioned in the GD thread quoted from above. Some of the questions are: What percentage of those guests are members not logged in? If they had to log in, would they? If they had to log in to read, would they post more? Are the other guests people we want, or people we don't want, or not people at all? |

^ It strikes me that most sites don’t have these stats publicly available. I can’t know how many people are looking at my Facebook profile right now, and don’t really care. So the idea of good guests/bad guests seems kind of foreign to me. What’s the worst they could be doing? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

They could be rotting their brains without a password.
Which raises an interesting question - does Nick's owe the ordinary person reading their tablet on the Clapham Omnibus a duty of care to avoid allowing them to absorb carcinogenic drivel? |

Guess the answer would be “who cares??” |

There are so many issues, I don't know where to begin... with randomly chosen points in small portions, I guess.
As a GD example, it's always been the case that oppo supporters have not been welcome, and presumably that feeling extends to visiting and not just commenting. There was a Saints fan around 2010 who participated and was treated cordially, but that's about it... |
