By Not Letting the Big Companies to Rip You Off for your Entertainment.
Also get it Format the way you want it. For Example not everyone has DVD/BlueRay Machines to Watch with so People want it in a Video File so they can watch on what they want.
People just don't have Spare Cash these Days for Entertainment

The one I frequent specialises in TV recordings, bootlegs and old videotapes of world cinema, most of which has never been released on DVDs and many titles of which may well never be. The community works hard on making English subtitles for the titles, and through this people get the chance to watch films that are otherwise rotting in an archive somewhere. It’s still piracy amd still totally illegal, but they deserve a UN medal for art preservation or something.

Fair enough, hard to argue against that specific use. But I doubt it’s the case for most such sites, and - i’m Guessing here - probably not the ones FOXTEL has blocked.

In times past, people didn’t have spare cash for loaves of bread but if they took a loaf of bread, they would (if caught) have been liable for a lengthy term of imprisonment or worse (ranging up to the death penalty and even - for the most egregious cases - transportation to Tasmania).
Why is downloading a video-file that you can buy for $30 on Blu-ray or DVD or as a legitimately-acquired download file online not the same as stealing the disc from the store? It’s scarcely a “necessity”.
House prices have been going up and people don’t really have spare cash for houses anymore, so ....
Where do you draw your line? |

Is this actually true? This is the belief that everyone grows up hearing, but I've seen claims it's all a myth. |

When you Download Something its still there and IF you steal from a shop the DVD is gone so no one can buy it then as disc is gone

In general, the whole copyright issue is problematic in many ways...
There are serious arguments that radical solutions are needed that will help maintain the spirit of the original laws, which have (so the argument goes) been subverted for the benefit of parasites. |

You didn't need to steal much. My Grandfathers grandfather was transported to NSW for stealing a few pounds of lead off a cottage roof. He was 17, his older brother did 7 years on a prison hulk in England (if he lived, I'm not sure. A high number died on board those things)

New movies are one thing. Cinemas pay for their exclusive rights so they get the period to make their money before it goes to DVD.
Both FTA TV and Foxtel have to pay to secure the rights to show TV shows. They recoup their money and make profit from advertising and via subscription charges. They don't get the content for free.
So the cost of downloading isn't so much that the artists don't get paid (unless you count royalties which I don't understand) but that the TV stations and cinemas can't recoup their costs and lose money. The flow on is, if they don't make money, they won't pay as much for the rights to TV series, which then hits the producers and actors.

I don't download CAM Versions. IF I want to see a Movie I go to the Cinema to Watch it.
I have never heard of a TV Series get Taken off the Air just because people Supposedly Pirated it.
Well sadly with the Internet that things can be Downloaded Free so Sadly there not as much money in the Industry that was there Pre-Internet
