Interesting that our two AA players are also our best endurance athletes. Is that a comment on (i) the nature of the modern game (with implications for recruiting strategy), (ii) our run and carry game plan and the importance of these blokes to it, or (iii) just happenstance, given two very talented blokes ?

Food for thought.

( i ) particularly when you get later into the draft.

Yes, a mate commented the other day that the first and second halves seem like a different game in modern AFL. The first half is highly congested, clotted and slow, with low scoring, and then later it opens up and becomes a lot more of a runner’s game.

I wonder if rotations make allowance for this - burst players having more game time in the first half, and endurance runners getting more time on ground in the second to try and run the opposition off their legs. Maybe a host of players who are endurance runners first, and competent footballers second is a killer strategy.

First it was footballers, then it was athletes, now it’s endurance runners...next it will be who the hell knows what. With so many rule changes and copycat tactics the game changes from one year to the next, and ends careers faster than it ever has (i.e. Steve McKee). It starts some careers too, but next year there will probably be a rule that no player is allowed to exceed 15KM on their GPS tracker, cos it’s not fair that some players can run far and stuff, and Tom Phillips will be just another 50-something draft pick!
