I think we should pause for a moment and acknowledge the selfless act of genuine sacrifice by the extraordinarily brave gendarme, Lt Col Arnaud Beltrame, who exchanged places with the hostages. What a great loss.

"Gendarmes attempting to evacuate the supermarket found Lakdim holding several hostages. A gendarme volunteered to take the hostages’ place. The gunman agreed to the swap, so the gendarme stayed with him while others were evacuated. That gendarme left his mobile phone line open on a table so security forces outside could hear what was going on inside. When security forces outside the store heard via the telephone that a shot was fired, they immediately stormed the supermarket and shot Lakdim dead.

Lt Col Arnaud Beltrame, the gendarme who had swapped places with the hostages, was found seriously injured. Early on Saturday morning, the French interior ministry said Beltrame had died from his injuries.

Van strikes crowd in Muenster, Germany, killing 2, injuring 20 others


BERLIN -- Authorities say a van crashed into a crowd Saturday outside a popular bar in the German city of Muenster, killing two people and injuring 20 others. The driver of the vehicle shot and killed himself after the crash, local police said. Six of the injured are listed in critical condition.

It's not yet clear who the suspect is or what the motive is. Police said they are examining reports that other suspects may have fled the crash scene.

The incident is being treated as terrorism, but the suspect's identification has not yet been transferred to the U.S., a U.S. intelligence source told CBS News.

Herbert Reul, the interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia state, said the driver was a German citizen. Reul stressed the investigation is at an early stage but said "at the moment, nothing speaks for there being any Islamist background."

German police’s explanation of this event: the man had “psychological problems” but apparently also explosives and accomplices, which mentally ill people who just snap one day don’t usually have. And note how the police misleadingly said that the attacker was a German, when now it turns out he was a Muslim migrant.

Paris attacker 'shouting Allahu akbar' shot dead by police after stabbing victims in street

Police have shot a man who launched a knife attack in Paris dead after he killed at least one person and injured four others.

A witness told The Independent the assailant was shouting "Allahu akbar" and trying to get into restaurants as diners barricaded the doors

Peak madness is perhaps more like it. I don't think it's necessarily more 'evil' (if that word even means anything) to kill your own children than to kill somebody else's. Of course, if you believe that you and they will be rewarded in heaven, then you're doing them a favour, right? So it's peak disconnection from reality, really, in its most violent possible manifestation.
