2017 Annual Report (pdf) available at
http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/club/annual-reports

In the Annual Report is says:

Total comprehensive income attributable to: Members of Collingwood Football Club 2017 = $2,732,624

In 2017 we had 75,879 members.

That works out to be $36 per member.

Is that right?

^^^
I'm looking at p.6, which I assume is where that comes from.

It seems to me that (2,732,624) is actually a (sub)total loss, with the parentheses indicating a loss. At the top, they show total revenue and other income (no parentheses), and then beneath that are a string of expenses (all parenthesized), giving that net loss. That figure does not change below that...

With the AGM upon us, let me look at pre-forum questions and what partial answers arose at or after the forum.

K wrote:
Question M1:

What is the plan for the club doctor position? When did Chris Bradshaw know there was a problem, and when did the club know? If he regains his legal ability to practise medicine, will he resume his position at the club? [Currently, the sole club doctor is Greg Shuttleworth.]

More generally, is the club satisfied with the performance of its medical staff, including the specialists (surgeons, etc.) whose services it uses? For example, Jamie Elliott first injured his ankle in February and this was dismissed as quite minor, but now it'll be next February at best before it's fixed. Are all his ongoing ankle problems related, and were they managed as well as they could have been?
...

(Partial) Answer M1:

No direct news on club doctors from the club as far as I'm aware. But Bradshaw's status is still listed as "Suspended" on AHPRA's website after almost 5 months. The longer it goes on, the stranger it seems... (What could he have done to deserve this?)

As I noted elsewhere, it seems Ruben Branson has joined the staff as a club doctor: a known quantity who was with us in the years up to and including the premiership year. If that's a permanent addition, then that means the two club doctors this year are Branson and Shuttleworth.

On Elliott, the club suggested he'd be fine. Let's hope so, but we've heard that before. Even if he does make Round 1, the question remains about the management of the ankle for the last 12 months. (He played games late in the season. A mistake?)

But more damning is actually the case of Tim Broomhead.

Quote:
...and a left shoulder injury in mid-2015 which plagued him for a year longer than it needed to. "I should have had surgery when I did it," he says.

"When I saw the surgeon and doctors after it happened, they said the strength would come back in a month or so."

It didn't though, and Broomhead laboured with one shoulder only fractionally as strong as the other.
...

"I couldn't tackle. At the start, I just couldn't lift my arm at all. It came back a tiny bit, but of my right [shoulder] it was only 25, 30 per cent. At best it got to 40 per cent."

Eventually he had surgery in 2016. It revealed, and repaired, a torn rotator cuff and detached tendons and removed loose bits of bone. "When [the doctor] opened it and saw that, he said, 'There's a little bit more than I initially thought'."

Broomhead was understandably frustrated. "It would have been nice if they could have worked that out from all the scans 14 months ago.

"I'm not really sure how they didn't work it out. There's not any point getting too angry. It would have been nice to have had it done 12 months early then I'd probably be a year ahead of where I am now, but not much can be done about it now."

He concedes it will probably never get to 100 per cent. "But I can tackle and use it properly now."

That doesn't really leave us much wiggle room: it seems either Broomhead is a very bad witness or there was some serious medical stuff-up.

Question P1:

To Bucks: Is there evidence that the players' kicking skills have undergone real and continuing improvement? At a previous Member Forum, you said that they had and that it takes time for people's perceptions to adjust to this. Well, another year has passed and the perceptions are still the same. Kick rating stats this year suggest Pendlebury was best, but he's always been that good. Those stats also suggest Crisp was one of the worst in the AFL this year.

Non-Answer P1:

Hmm... The evidence from the AFLX and intra-club matches was not all that encouraging. We know that they're practising this stuff with a lot of competitive match sim in training. More patience required?
It seems they regarded N. Murphy's kicking as elite and this influenced their draft decision.

Question B2:

To Mark Anderson: Many people still consider Swimming Australia to be in turmoil. What mistakes have you made and what have you learnt from them? Bill Sweetenham, the former head coach, called for you to resign. According to the media, coaches have felt alienated, complaining that they and the swimmers don't see much of that $38 million budget, and have left in droves to coach for other nations. Also, why have swimmers been missing drug tests under your watch?

My takeaways from the forum ...

Our new CEO
Other recent appointees by competitors were not even on our short list. Club wanted a different type, with less of an AFL indoctrination but an ability to be a professional administrator/businessman, with some sporting background. Importantly, he had been a CEO before. Club feel he really drove a turnaround in Swimming post the lows in our performance at the London Olympics. Considered of high value and integrity. I'm hopeful he can drive change at Collingwood too.
...

The Comm. Games swimming trials are apparently in the next four days. Perhaps Anderson's start date is soon after...

Question B1:

[To Eddie, Peter & Mark:] What steps have been taken to ensure that the club acts professionally, making decisions according to proper process rather than one person's whim and fancy, with a strong board and accountability? There have been good signs under Peter Murphy's interim CEOship, but how do we know this will continue?

...

(Partial) Answer B1:

No word about any ongoing role for Peter Murphy, as far as I'm aware.

The review's recommendation that Collingwood introduce term limits for directors in future is interesting and possibly much needed. I'd like the club to be seriously questioned about this proposal. e.g. ...

Question B3:

Will the club introduce term limits for all directors, including the president? If so, what is the procedure to make this change and when will it occur? What are the details, such as the maximum length of a term (8 yrs? 10 yrs?)?

Question M2:

Why has the club not hired a sports psychologist, despite having done so successfully in the past (and despite other clubs doing so now)? Several past and current players (Fasolo, Cloke, Ben Kennedy) have suffered depression in their time at the club. Yet, as far as I am aware, there hasn't been a proper sports psychologist since Simon Lloyd departed in 2010.

[David Stiff doesn't count, and he's long gone anyway.]

...

Answer M2:

Okay, my current personal opinion is that this is probably an epic fail by the club.

I'll explain this opinion in more detail later...

But let me just say for now that one of the scarcely mentioned conditions placed upon JDG by the club was that "Jordan has made a commitment to enlist the assistance of medical professionals..." The media report the medical professional will be a psychologist referred by the AFLPA... And, let me repeat, we don't have a club psychologist. Need I say more??

People - it's time to wake up & realise that we are not members of a club. We have no say in how it's run, or who is in the drivers seat. The fact that the club has a nominations committee that vets all candidates and then decides who can sit on the board renders any of us as members redundant. We are all simply walking ATM's - a source of cash in which the board has no accountability to or respects. Do any of you think the AGM is anything other than an excuse for Ed to hand out some flashy plaques, sing the theme song and provide a one-night-only session for the footy ops team to be on the receiving end of fast discontent? Once upon a time, the after game in the social club would be where the players, coaches etc could get a real taste of fan dissatisfaction. That's now been reduced to one night a year. No, I don't go to these meetings as work comes first. But as a member I think maybe it's time for the club to post the financials before the AGM - give members time to go over the results and maybe we can hit the club to explain what our fees are actually being spent on. It's not high performance results.

Dan, do you want something more detailed than their available annual report?

A dictatorship would no doubt be more palatable if the club were sweeping up premierships -- which clearly it isn't.

If even unopposed board nominees had to be validated by the members, say with a 75% majority of the vote required, that small threat might help with accountability.

The review recommended term limits. Unfortunately, details are really lacking at the moment. Someone needs to grill Eddie et al. about this.

It is unclear, at this stage, how the term limits would impact on McGuire — and other long-serving members of his board — once he has completed this term as president. It is not known when they would take effect.

The two new board members were nominated unopposed last night. Their appointments were ratified by a vote by the members attending the meeting. I didn't witness anyone putting their hand up opposing the appointments. That's an endorsement of 100% of the members so I don't know how you can say the processes aren't democratic.

I'm not sure if this was addressed to me or Dan, or everyone... but I guess I can comment regardless.

For me, where things lie on the democracy-dictatorship spectrum is not the biggest issue. I realize, though, that it is a big deal for many others, some of whom have expressed that sentiment in this thread. For me, what matters most is success. How exactly different degrees and forms of democracy aid or hinder success is not entirely clear to me. On the other hand, professionalism and proper process really do matter, and these rely on accountability. The question is what is the best way to enforce accountability.

I don't really think the specifics of the latest board additions are the issue. It's hard to imagine anyone seriously objecting to Licuria, for example. (And it's hard to imagine people knowing enough about Sizer to object to her, either.) Some Nicksters have grumbled that he might be an Eddie yes man, but the news he's close to Murphy may allay such fears. However, the hardcore members of the pro-democracy camp might argue more generally that votes should occur after sufficent time has been given and sufficient information (whatever that means) has been supplied about the nominees. Moreover, they might stress that the vote should be secret. (Otherwise, the argument would go, dissent might be not much more common than attendees in a wedding ceremony objecting to the marriage when given the chance.)

A blind umpire cost Ray Shaw life membership in 1979. About time.
