https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/feb/24/nra-florida-shooting-delta-united

"Speaking at the CPAC conference held near Washington DC last week, Wayne LaPierre, the veteran chief executive of the NRA, warned that “opportunists” had used the shooting to “smear” the gun lobby group.

LaPierre warned his conservative audience that a “tidal wave of new European socialists” standing as Democrats would use a gun control agenda as part of a bid to “eradicate all individual freedoms” in the US."

How unfair - using a "shooting" as a means of smearing a "gun lobby group"! There's no possible link between shootings and guns.

If the next shooting (ie the next 38 seconds) of an American is Wayne Lapeckerhead then the world will be a better place.

the second amendment:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

if one believes in the second amendment means anything, it means you read all of it:

the problem is the NRA and most gun owners in the USA is they only read part of it; "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

They have long forgotten the part about "well regulated"

Well regulated in the modern context means federal gun licencing laws in order to make background checks actually effective.

Well regulated means people who own guns are members of of their local gun clubs and shoot regularly with members of their local community who know them well and report any potential crazy f%#@k wit.

well regulated means you don't get to buy a whole heap of guns when you feel like it and stock pile them in a room while having paranoid delusions when using psychotropic drugs.

The second amendment could actually work if it wasn't defined by illiterate fu#$kwits ...

It was defined by the Supreme Court. Also interesting that you call people illiterate when you obviously don’t understand basic English.

"A balanced breakfast, being necessary to a healthy diet, the right of the people to keep and eat food, shall not be infringed."

Whose rights shall not be infringed - the people's, or the breakfast's?

Here’s the Supreme Court verdict

https://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/07-290.ZS.html

“ 1. The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. Pp. 2–53.

(a) The Amendment’s prefatory clause announces a purpose, but does not limit or expand the scope of the second part, the operative clause. The operative clause’s text and history demonstrate that it connotes an individual right to keep and bear arms. Pp. 2–22.”

Most people who bag it would have never read it.

2. Like most rights, the [b]Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms. Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons.

So it shouldn’t be too hard to stop gun shops and dealers selling to kids, the mentally challenged or the really nasty stuff, except it is, kids are still dying

Clamp it down or take it away

I was a bit taken aback recently when an acquaintance who lives in Portland told me that it's almost necessary to own a gun to protect yourself.

The thing is, unless you practice with it you're more likely to hurt yourself than protect yourself.

handguns are not as easy to hit targets with as it looks like in the movies and some larger calibre ones have significant recoil. I fired a selection of handguns at a range a few years back and the instructor was impressed at how it didn't kick up for a novice. (if you can shoot a 12 gauge 1 handed, a desert eagle 2 hands is no problem)

A lot of larger gun shops will actually do "fittings" for the first time buyer, picking something that can fit comfortably in their hand and/or handbag and show them how to fire it so the recoil doesn't break their wrist.

Interestingly in Portland, 2 of the 3 gun stores seem to have closed, with 1 store and 2 clubs.

here's the store. They even have pink ones for the ladies. http://thegunbroker.com/product-category/products/handguns/

Portland is full of hipster wankers like inner Melbourne, probably pays to carry 24/7. Laughing

Oregon is an open carry state with no licence required unless imposed by a local municipality.

So if you walk around with a glock on your hip wearing a T shirt that says "i hate hipsters" you could have an interesting time. Razz

The NRA have spoken, nothing will change as they own Trump and the Republicans.

And for Pro Trumpies. He expects us to believe that he man who faked medical injury to avoid Vietnam has grown a spine and would run unarmed into a building with an armed shooter. What a lying sack of shit. He'd be hiding like a baby behind everyone he could.

Again, how do the NRA 'own' Trump when he's a multi billionaire?

Also

As for draft dodging, he had student deferments followed by being classified 1Y - medical issues meaning he'd only be called up in a national emergency. 15.4 Million kids had deferments or were disqualified. Unlike Bill Clinton who fled the draft, Trump's non service was pretty much routine. He never volunteered, but I'd never hold that against anyone and anyone who did is a bit of a C.

Perhaps they should just have a new law in the US to make it compulsory for people carrying guns to kill other people carrying guns. And one to make it an absolute liability capital offence to shoot someone who doesn’t have a gun.
