That was played on a tiny ground.
Everyone I've spoken to thinks AFLX is stupid. _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

You cant play Aussie rules overseas because there are only soccer or rugby grounds available so some hybrid game needs to be created to allow for this. Unfortuately aflx looked woeful. But keep experimenting. |

AFLX is nothing more than glorified circle work.
Hard to get enthused about.
Chris Fagan also made the point that it is hard for the crowd to get involved with because of the continuous nature of the game.
Kick a super goal and no time to celebrate, although that doesn't seem to impact basketball. |

It's like watching a Lela Star video. The originals are great. But then you look at the new ones and she's just had too many weird surgeries.
Still watchable, but no where near as good. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

^ For the players, it may also be like watching one of those videos: you can look at your opponents but not touch them. |

I get the overseas thing but if a bunch of ex pats want to play afl on a rectangular ground they will. Watching this crap won't change a thing, as a matter of fact I hate the blatant commercialism. What the f is BT going on about with these zoopers.
It would make some sense to set up the rules and language before they start selling ice poles. I could only handle a few minutes of this shite.
"What a zooper"
"They kicked a zooper"
"They kicked no zoopers"
"That zooper was amazing" |

It's not even clear the zooper makes sense. When they had supergoals in pre-season games, there was some degree of difficulty being rewarded. It's not exactly difficult kicking a goal from just over 40m. And it's more usual on small grounds with reduced player numbers (I'm thinking casual games here) to impose rules that forbid players goaling from long distance, forcing some sort of teamwork to get the ball very close to goal, |

I stumbled across it last night but changed channels after 10 seconds, that was all I needed to see to prove it that the aflx concept is bullshit. |

As an International fan of AFL I guess this was supposed to appeal to me but I switched off almost straight away. In fairness it was only on the third day of the competition that I realised it was even being broadcast in the UK, so perhaps I'd have given it more attention had it been the Pies playing.
If they want to appeal to the International market why not play real AFL pre or post-season fixtures abroad? I attended the last time the AFL (Western Bulldogs v Port Adelaide) came over to London for an exhibition game and there was a very healthy crowd. My friend (who barracks for the Brisbane Lions) came all the way over from Switzerland just for the game. |

I watched it again today, and there were lots of things to hate - the rank dumb commercialism (flashing goal posts and the brain-dead zooper rubbish), the ping pong movement from one end of the ground to the other, etc .... but I thought there were a few promising things about it.
Firstly, it looked far less likely to result in serious injuries. Since Umpires began over-rewarding the tackler, I have become very uneasy about the impact of the game on young men’s bodies and the long term damage done by the battering they receive week in and week out. It’s not about wanting contactless or touch football, it is about making good players sustainable and getting the best performance form them. When coaches say that everyone is playing injured by the end of a season, we should worry about the game. We should also worry about the lives these young men will be able to lead when they are 50.
Second, the games were a bit boring but that’s because there was nothing behind it, and so the crowds had no intensity. Since it is the crowd that makes football live, that drained of energy and excitement. If you had attached four premiership points to that game, however, it would have been quite intense to watch. The best bits about modern footy are always when the game is allowed to flow, or a flow is unexpectedly stopped. There is a lot of potential for this in a less crowded form of the game, and it happened more last night than it does in a modern H&A game.
Third, there were a lot more one on one contests, and winning one of these contests had more impact than it does in the normal game today. I also liked the idea of awarding a kick against the last player to touch it before it went out of bounds, as this reduces the potential for scrums at throw-ins. Ditto the idea of not awarding a mark for a backward kick, which keeps it moving and gives less reward to one of the modern game’s more boring features.
Fourth, the umpiring was better than usual, because the game was far less congested and the contests were more visible and one on one. Our game is now so congested and hair-trigger that it is nearly impossible to umpire well, and that is sapping enjoyment from it for fans and players, let alone the umpires themselves.
I don’t want to see AFL-X as it stands become a “thing”. It’s too loose, too short-duration, too rewarding of running at the expense of other skills and body types, too American, and too easy to score. But there were ideas here that could be brought into the regular game to bring back its best days. Most important of these is the idea of significantly fewer players participating on a slightly smaller ground, creating a freer, flowing game which is easier to umpire and involves far fewer crunching tackles. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

anyone notice how rarely the ball goes out of bounds. its funny to watch AFL players use their skills to keep the ball in rather than out. It just shows that 80 per cent of times when the ball goes out of bounds, it is deliberate! this rule would make an amazing difference to AFL football. Defensive teams would try to run a playter out of bounds and the ball would need to be used by the attacking team more up the central corridor to avoid a turnover. _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |
