Many thanks for the private messages and well-wishes.
The surgeon has asked me to lose twenty kilograms (pre-op)- about the only way I can do this is if they remove the other leg!!
There are six weeks today until round one-bad knee or not, I will be cheering our boys onto a glorious win against the brown and gold.

Lad all the best for your operation mate.
I trust the doctors will do the job well and maybe then we can rookie draft you next season in your beloved black n white maybe in the position of goal sneak
I for one miss you inciteful training reports and can't wait for your return to the keyboard to add your eloquent appraisal of our players and there progress |

Hope it goes well lad.
20kg is a tad difficult to drop when you have a buggered knee unless you starve yourself. maybe trade in the P76 for a Harley Trike and a knee brace.
You'll be up and about in no time. Best wishes. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I wonder why that's deemed necessary. It's not the first thing I would have thought of at the mention of knee surgery.
I'm more used to people reporting dropping weight as a result of surgery. |

Excessive weight puts more strain on all joints, it's just a factor that will complicate recovery most likely. _________________ Pies forever |

IIRC it's also an issue for the Anaesthetist trying to knock you out for the surgery. Being overweight can increase your likelihood of not waking up from the surgery or having complications.

Got it in one, Mr Stui Magpie.
BMI is way too high- am on essentially a 'zero-carbs' regime to drop the weight. Going well so far. But loads more to lose.
Exercise is problematic except walking in water at the nearby indoor pool in Yarra Junction.
about 15kgs to go and, oddly enough, the knee is far less troublesome already.

Good luck with the weight loss, but don't take too much notice of the BMI, it isn't very accurate. I am very fit and have very little fat on me yet it says that I am 8kg over the top weight range for my height. To come within the not overweight range I would have to go down to the weight I was at when I was a skinny 16 year old and hadn't finished growing. |

The club seems to like using the 7-site skinfold test, presumably because it's convenient (my gut reaction [ahemm] is that surely it's not highly accurate).
Our reigning club champion worries more about this than the 2k time trial. And well he might: apparently he's annually at risk of returning from the break and scoring 55mm. Steele, you fatty! |

Increased weight increases the risk of complications - especially infection - with joint replacement, especially knee replacement. But the anaesthetist will be thankful too
Get in the swimming pool - maybe the club will re fill the pool under the boards at Olympic Park and you can kill two birds with one stone

All the best mate. Here’s for a very speedy recovery too.
Thing with knees is they take so much everyday, extra weight just adds to the hammering they cop. Three reasons, as above and also to give the best chance of success. If your already noticing after 5 kg, imagine after 10, 15! Probably doing your heart a favour too. Good luck with it mate, we all miss your reports, second to none. Take care Laddy. As some of us get older, health issues become more and more important. Btw, you've inspired me to lose a few more kilos by avoiding the carbs too. All the best mate. |
