Another 5 quick wickets will make for an entertaining day’s play.

All out 233. They lost the last 7 for 64, after all that. Starc got 5.

Aussies romp in. Starc 5fa.

Josh Hazlewood set the scene for the day with the wickets of Chris Woakes (5) and Joe Root (67), in the first few overs.

Jonny Bairstow (36) fought on gallantly till Mitchell Starc - 5/88 - ran through the tail, to see Australia win by 120 runs. Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon took 2 wickets each.

Shaun Marsh was named Player of the Match.

Just goes to show what an arrogant f&ck Smith has become.

We had the option to send those DUDS in for follow-on, with an entire session under lights with a seaming ball, having already taken 9 of their wickets in the previous two sessions; but no - his majesty Lord Know-it-all sends us back in.

This test should have been close to over today. Bravo cock head.

If we lose this, I hope he and Lehmann both get the arse.

Not arrogant, I think, just tactically incompetent. Batting skill and captaincy skill are two completely different things. The decision belies very rigid thinking.

Do we know what the fitness advisers thought? There’s a potential problem with burning out your 3 fast bowlers in a 4-bowler attack by following on. Say we’d gone in, picked up some early wickets and then someone had done a significant injury, would that have led to criticism of stupidity of a different kind?

Not to my knowledge. (Who is it that advises them about this sort of thing??) We do know he didn't consult the bowlers, though, which is kind of strange. The question is whether a (predicted) smaller overall load but with back-to-back bowling is worse than a bigger (predicted) overall load spaced out. Perhaps it'd have been better to sacrifice a bit by bowling the part-timers more, with the follow-on enforced.
