The Pies got running defender Sam Murray from the Swans on Thursday in a deal in which they traded future picks as they prepare for the possibility of adding father-son Will Kelly and next-generation academy member Isaac Quaynor to their list for 2019.

ISAAC QUAYNOR | OAKLEIGH CHARGERS

Another Charger not eligible until the 2018 draft, Quaynor impressed across the backline for Oakleigh. His reading of the flight was superb, and his work one on one was sensational, using his body strongly to take four contested marks. The best of these was a beautiful one hander while fending off his opponent. He used the ball cleanly and demonstrated good vision and decision making when exiting the defensive third. Has some good traits to work with.

He's been named in the AFL Level 2 Academy for next year for the top 25 Under 17's from this year.

Promising prospect.

How does this academy selection work?

Do we get first go at him? Can we be out-bid?

From what I can gather these academy players are ranked on a points system and you can utilise a number of draft selections to accumulate the points required to take them?

Or am I way off?

Same as FS, but they changed the rule about stockpiling draft picks (after that first year when GWS stockpiled picks). You can only take in the number of picks you have space for on your list.

So if Im not wrong, then Hine did a smart thing by acquiring Murray and at the same time still having the third round ( or if you like the second pick ) to get our father son (Kelly) and have enough points (also using pick 70 from Swans ) to get Quaynor.

Would like to kow much pick 70 is worth, the AFL did have a scale system table that showed picks and their worth.

Hope that made sense but if true then thats a bit of smarts shown by Hine.

This takes into consideration that we are pretty adamant Kelly is the player we want and think is better than any available player we could have got at second pick.
Thats the trick that would partly determine the success of this Murray trade, along with if Murray is actually a good player for us.

If anyone knows much about Will Kelly I would appreciate any input, thanks.

It's a multicultural and indigenous pathway program. I hear it is based on linguistic ethnicity so Ireland, USA, UK kids would not be eligible. Dunno about Saffers. They might make it

Isaac has an mother "of Australian heritage" but a Ghanian father so he qualifies

Pick 70 is this year and the Kelly and Quaynor is next year. Pick 70 and /or 61 may be needed for father/son Tyler Brown.

But the draft order and points table is here.

Funnily enough, the only reason we need pick 70 is if Tyler Brown is nominated at pick 39. By my math, we would be 6 points short (using 56 and 65 on him). But having our third round pick in 2018 lose 6 points would not even hurt us enough to lose a spot in the draft.

i guess if Tyler is taken with pick 62-67, there is some harm that you lose draft position in 2018, but who cares if your 5th round draft pick gets downgraded a few spots in 2018.

At the end of the day, i think Collingwood just wanted to upgrade their 5th pick in the draft from 80 to 70. it really is a meaningless trade.

Quaynor has been something of a surprise packet as a bottom-ager, blossoming into a damaging, creative and smart half-back for the Oakleigh Chargers late in the TAC Cup season. He reads the game well from there and has nice skills to offer some rebound. Collingwood has Quaynor in its Next Generation Academy.
