Mighty Magpie’s 2018 Season Preview

Following on from my 2017 and 2016 previews:
2017: http://magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopic.php?t=81406

Offseason Trade and List Management Blog: http://magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopic.php?t=82948

In this thread I will try to provide links to pre-season training updates and other relevant information.

Much of this is pulling together work done by others and I try to acknowledge when I do use others' work. If I do fail to do this along the way I apologise and feel free to send me a PM and I will correct it asap. Also, post any errors or omissions and I will correct.

Cheers MM. I went and had a look at the big footy training report.
Was very impressed by the amount of players who aren't required to be at training at this time actually in attendance. Says a lot about the leadership of the club and the players themselves.
Was very happy to hear JDG was looking in supreme shape already. Looks like he's learned from his minor indiscretion from last preseason.
Pendles Adams Treloar showing up early and working with the new recruit plus the younger players is a very encouraging sign.
The photo of Wills & Maynard showed they had obviously worked hard away from the club already looking at there body shape.
Looks to me that Mayanrd has been told he needed miles in his legs and to build his engine if he wanted to go into the midfield more in 2018 and has done some hard work already. For a kid of 21 if he's used his time off to better prepare himself for this role shows loads of commitment to the club and his own personal development.

Scott Pendlebury not sighted after half-time. Looked like he was getting treatment for his finger late in first half. #ausvire @theagesport @agerealfooty

Josh Smith is (apparently) uncontracted, but training (see tweeted pic today of 2km time trial).

I assume that means he is likely to be drafted in the rookie draft given that we have only 4 [EDIT] spots available on the primary list.

Remember that under the new CBA the distinction between primary listed and rookie listed players seems to be pretty much non-existent for purposes of who can be selected in the senior side.

He finished 2nd in the 2klm time trial today behind Tom Phillips. Seems to have improved his engine in the off season as well.
Good signs that the players have retuned in such good condition

My bad - happened because he was contracted for 2018. I will delete him from the senior list and adjust my comment re 3 spots.

Personally, I think Ramsey would be a better rookie choice than Oxley. Neither of them have had a good run injury wise and both appear unlikely to make the team given how stacked we are for wingers and HBFers

Varcoe, Wells, Sidebottom, WHE all ahead of Oxley

Langdon, Scharenberg, Maynard, Goldsack, Crisp all well ahead of Ramsey.

I think that if Scharenberg's career didn't get back on track, Ramsey might have gotten another contract.

I want the Algerian ,manager to do the pressers."Robbo, put down the sausage roll and get out. On second thoughts shove it up your bum.Get out. Get out. You are a liar and a stirrer and have no idea about the game. Go and do something else. Leave the ginger nuts where they are, just leave. You are not welcome here. Ever. |

I'd say that Varcoe and Wells have 2 seasons left each at most and will miss a fair bit of footy between here and retirement. Oxley mightn't set the world on fire but he has exposure to the top level and did ok when given the opportunity. Provided he can keep himself out of the medical room, he would be decent enough backup and cheap as chips too.

Hope I'm wrong, but I suspect this may well be Reid's last year as well.
