David, we agree. What is needed is a retired Lawrence from the Castle with someone with a bit of cash behind him to either challenge the high court or threaten to. Flood the idiots for years so they can't retire on massive pensions until they either come up with something sensible or they can resign now.

So if the reasoning is you can stand because you no one knows your father as against a genuine relationship probably means you can't be in Federal parliament if your Dad was a pommy bastard but if you are a real bastard come on down and thats how silly the ruling was. An expedient decision made by a bunch of lawyers who have no concept of the populations expectations.

Unfortunately, I think the High Court are bound by the constitution. There’s only one way to change this.

44. Any person who -

(i.) Is under any acknowledgement of allegiance, obedience, or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or citizen of a foreign power: or

It's all pretty clear. Just have a referendum to remove the word "citizen" and we're probably all good.

I'd prefer to keep s 44(i) as it is. I just wish federal politicians knew how to abide by it.

Crikey.

And yes, I'm glad you mentioned that in this thread, Culprit. That's what actual conflict of interest looks like – but the constitution has nothing to say about being in the pocket of big miners.

So, hypothetically, if we were at war with another country, could that country deliberately create parliamentary havoc for us by granting citizenship to all our parliamentarians? Wink
