More re. Peter Murphy, proper process, etc.
(http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/challenging-collingwood-president-eddie-mcguire-when-needed-will-be-the-challenge-for-magpie-board-20171010-gyy2jk.html):
Quote: |
Everyone you speak to at Collingwood extols the virtues of Peter Murphy, who in turn has appointed InterSearch, the Australian and international recruiting firm to seek the club's next chief executive.
...
In fact, the only disappointment at the club where Murphy is concerned is that he won't be staying on himself to replace Gary Pert.
...
Murphy, previously a consultant to the Collingwood board, the executive chairman of the anti-poverty group Global Citizen and founder of the Pan Group, has worked with Chris Thomas – Egon Zehnder's former managing partner – to scrutinise the club's governance at board level as well.
Given the directors are McGuire appointees and given McGuire's back-room leadership style it will have been some achievement by Murphy and Thomas if it truly unfolds that the Collingwood board feel truly empowered to regularly challenge him when required.
Murphy has told the club he will not be its next CEO due to other commitments but he has made his mark and – while this is October after all – Collingwood seems a significantly happier place. The mistrust and the subterfuge has been removed.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/hawthorn-appoint-geelong-executive-justin-reeves-as-ceo-20171016-gz29vj.html
Quote: | Hawthorn has moved quickly to appoint a new CEO, announcing Geelong's chief commercial officer Justin Reeves had accepted the position just two weeks after deciding to replace Tracey Gaudry.
...
Rather than go through an executive search process, the club pounced on Reeves who was a candidate to become the Cats' CEO after Brian Cook.
...
Reeves joined Geelong in 2015 after establishing his reputation in seven years at Collingwood from 2008-2015 and has previously worked at Foxtel.
He has worked under Magpies club president Eddie McGuire and spent time at Harvard University after winning the AFL's Graeme Samuel Scholarship in 2011.
...
The Hawks' swift move leaves Carlton, Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs seeking new CEOs for 2018.

Addendum:
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/jeff-kennett-and-hawthorn-have-rattled-geelong-20171017-gz2gri.html
Quote: | Justin Reeves had long been considered the natural successor to Brian Cook, the game's second longest serving CEO, except that unlike the situation unfolding at Sydney with Andrew Ireland and Tom Harley there was no written assurance in place.
...
Cook has reportedly been sounded out by at least two of the three Victorian clubs (Collingwood, Carlton and the Bulldogs) still searching for new bosses and refused to entertain those entreaties, but he would probably be feeling a little uncomfortable today.

Quote: |
Geelong chief executive Brian Cook has signed a contract extension with the Cats which will tie him to the club until the end of 2020.
...
Cook is understood to have been approached by Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs, and reportedly also was contacted by Carlton.
|
Addendum:
Quote: |
Cook had offered to step aside from the Geelong position he has held since 1999 at the end of next season to make way for Reeves but the Cats board was not prepared to guarantee Reeves the position and was reluctant to let Cook go.
...
However former AFL football boss Simon Lethlean, forced out of head office after just five months in that role, is regarded a near certainty for the Blues role with the strong belief among senior industry figures that he has already been offered the job.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/chris-judd-kate-jenkins-on-panel-to-select-new-carlton-chief-executive-20171031-gzc2xz.html
Quote: | High-profile Carlton directors Kate Jenkins and Chris Judd will make up half the panel selecting the club's new chief executive – the role widely expected to go to Simon Lethlean.
Jenkins, the Australian sex discrimination commissioner, was one of several board members who were keen for the Blues to conduct a transparent process...
...
President Mark LoGiudice will head the panel, which will also include a recruitment executive from the firm Egon Zender, seconded by the Blues to run the search for a new club boss.
Jenkins' inclusion on the panel is understood to be seen as a statement by Carlton given Lethlean's strong favouritism for the role and circumstances surrounding his departure from the role as AFL football operations boss.
...
Lethlean, who left the AFL in July, also met late in the season with Collingwood president Eddie McGuire.
The Magpies are also in the hunt for a new CEO and also running an executive search process. They made a strong play for veteran Geelong club boss Brian Cook, who was also sounded out by Carlton before extending his contract with the Cats until the end of 2020.

Jenkins, the Australian sex discrimination commissioner, was one of several board members who were keen for the Blues to conduct a transparent process...
You can draw your own conclusions from all of that.
1, Jenkins did not consider his actions to be worthy of all the hullaballoo and the AFL acted out overzealosusly about an issue that had nothing to do with with them . (I agree)
2. Carlton do not give a rats arse about the AFL code of conduct and confident they can pay out anyone if it is repeated (I agree)
3. Jenkins is there as a token and if she kicks up a stink will be out of there and with that goes all the trappings (tickets, events, profile etc) and any hope of her ending up on the AFL commission (with more trappings) (Very possible). She is a pair for the other token Chris Judd when surely Ahmed Fahrour (sic) who was on squillions as a CEO . or similar business people, could be better placed to make a decision such as this. (Very possible as well)
4. The AFL want to park him somewhere until all is forgotten and he comes back a better man for it all No one will question Jenkins judgement on this issue. (Extremely possible).
5. The scum want out of the Ethihad deal and want to play most games at MCG with a few boutique games at scum park. They want the intellectual property Lethlean will bring. They will use the womens league to get money out of the AFL and Government to refurbish scum park after the Cats got a boost. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/carlton/carlton-appoints-cain-liddle-as-new-chief-executive-officer/news-story
Quote: | CARLTON made an approach to Greater Western Sydney boss David Matthews about its chief executive role before settling on the man who helped build Richmond into a financial powerhouse Cain Liddle.
...
[T]he Herald Sun has confirmed Carlton also made a move for highly-respected Giants’ chief executive Matthews, but was knocked back by him. |
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-carlton-announce-cain-liddle-as-new-ceo-overlooking-simon-lethlean-20171108-gzh3z8.html
Quote: | ...
Lethlean had been strongly favoured for the position after he was understood to have reached at least an informal agreement with Carlton president Mark LoGiudice about a month ago.
It was the availability of Lethlean that was understood to be have been significant in the decision to move on former CEO Stephen Trigg, who will finish up with the club on Friday.
Lethlean has been well supported for a new role at a club by AFL chief executive Gill McLachlan. The Blues opted for Liddle instead, in large part, because they felt he had a superior commercial background to Lethlean.
Board members had been troubled that the hunt for process for the new CEO be seen as a boys' club appointment and wanted a full and proper process.
Despite Lethlean being highly favoured at the outset, that process ended up turning up a candidate the panel figured to be better suited than the former AFL football operations boss.
...

Addendum:
Quote: | The club [Collingwood] is not expected to appoint a new CEO until the new year, with Peter Murphy continuing as the interim CEO as the club implements recommendations from the review conducted in 2017.

HS fluff column...:
Quote: | ...
So what better way to go on a recruiting mission than for Magpies president Eddie McGuire to host the CEO Magazine Awards.
...
“I’ve got a room full of CEOs, so you never know what might happen. ...
“I may see if Gina Rinehart wants a second job. You never know your luck in the big city. Busy people, give them busy jobs.”
...
As always, Eddie is keeping his cards close to his chest. But new Australia Post CEO and Pies board member Christine Holgate was more forthcoming.
“He’s a very smart, interesting individual,” she smiled, talking of Lethlean. “What Collingwood needs is a CEO,” she added. Boom.
In the old days, Eddie might have picked who he wanted, but there is a more stringent process in place following a major review into the club’s operations headed by Peter Murphy.
...
Lethlean and former Victorian major events chief Brendan McClements are in the mix to replace Pert...
Eddie ...: “There is no hurry. Peter Murphy is filling the role doing a great job, so we don’t have to feel any pressure to put anyone on.
“We can just take our time and go through the process the way we want to do it. Nice and easy, no hassle. We are relaxed.” |
