So the victorian house of reps has passed the voluntary dying legislation. Now it's up to the upper house.

http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/health-problems/victoria-has-just-passed-voluntary-euthanasia-laws/news-story/85438dd30a6f15ed586586b0a086e8c4

Good thing for mine. My 78 year old mum reckons it's the only good thing Dandrews has done. I reckon he may have done a couple more but none come to mind immediately. Wink

I support this and I support the model they've gone with. I reckon there's opportunity to broaden the scope in the future as long as it's done carefully. Someone not of right mind can still be suffering but aren't able to make the call themselves. That's a tin of worms right there, but this is a good start.

Yeah, couldn't agree more.
This is a must in my opinion, having said that, it is pretty much already unofficially in place and has been for some time.

yeah, it has been, but uncontrolled and Dr's doing the 'right' thing have been breaking the law and risking their registration and livelihoods.

This is an improvement

Anyone know what the numbers are like in the upper house? Anyone breaking ranks in the Liberal Party, or are people pretty much voting along party lines?

It was reported as very much a conscience vote, haven't seen a breakdown.

The upper house (legislative council) has passed the bill 22 votes to 18.

I hope the safeguards and regulations are sufficient.

I always worry about the slippery slope effect.

You mean like a person getting euthanised early for convenience or to save money? Fair point

An excellent result. Hopefully other states will soon follow.

Good result in the end. I think the safeguards are strong and it's a good thing.
