Wonder if the Schache turn of events had any influence here? |

Apparently the Cats have gone cold on him cos they can’t meet Melbourne’s demands. What a bunch of pricks Melbourne are. Tell him to look elsewhere and then expect to get a good deal. Nice way to treat the guy. If that’s where he wants to go they should make sure the deal gets done. _________________ 'Collingwood are the Bradmans of Football'

I was shocked when I saw the time he recorded at the draft Combine for the 20m sprint all those years ago. If he really has that pace, he's surely by far the quickest guy of his size in the AFL. I guess if he's as soft as so many people think, he won't have lost pace from wear and tear, either. |

So he's toured Geelong and then later that day, the Cats say we're not going to be able to deal with Melbourne?
What are they asking?

It amazes me that clubs tell a contracted player that they are not required and then want other clubs to compensate them with very high asking prices. The only option is for the player to either continue to play at a club that stated that they did not want him or to break the contract if that is possible under the rules and go into the draft. This applies to both Watts and Stringer
The trading rules need to be changed to give the player opportunity for them to join the club of their choice whist giving the club some compensation. _________________ Now Retired - Every Day Is A Saturday |

Blicavs and Stanley are pretty quick. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

It seems maybe the "by far" should be retracted, but not because of those two...

Yeah, Stui, there are many interesting questions here. Rhys Stanley (200cm) was in the same Combine and apparently didn't make the top 11 for the 20m sprint (so he was presumably significantly behind Watts).
Blicavs (198cm) is the type of player I think Buckley would love to have multiple copies of. I think we can assume he didn't go to any Combine, given he was a non-footballer. As a former 1500m runner, he's got an amazing aerobic capacity (his 1500m PB is 3:43, when he was a lot lighter), but it seems probable to me that his 20m speed won't be so amazing.
And football-relevant speed does mean over 20m or less. Maybe a shorter distance is even more relevant; at the draft Combine, they measure the 5m, 10m and 20m splits for the 20m run.
Actually, the closest to Watts may be Nic Nat (201cm), whose time was not too far behind. This does make me wonder a bit whether that year there were particularly favourable conditions or some sort of systematic timing error. For comparison, Watts's time was the same as Nathan Freeman's five years later. In Freeman's year, he was outdone by Jonathan Marsh, who clocked 2.78s, which is the second-best time recorded. Marsh is relatively tall, only about an inch or two shorter than Watts, who is 196cm. |

If so, perhaps an interested party may be able to Lever-age that for a more favourable deal.
