A decent defence their swoop. But it leaves out one thing: Stringer's teammates were not ok with his behaviour and the club now wants him out. So, either it's not as common as you suggest or there's more to the story.

The gambling problems (?addiction) is quite concerning in many repsects. I'm just going to make my way to church and return home to my house of glass.

Are people so naive that they don't think this kind of stuff is happening with some of the players at our club right now and is a league wide issue?

For to long the toxic mix of young sexually available women, young men with lots of disposable income and a culture of drugs, alcohol and gambling has been kept hush hush for the most part...
...

So what more can be done to educate and help young footballers?

For starters the AFL need to take a social conscious stance and stop promoting gambling. It wont stop the problem but it wont be adding to it either.

The whole boys club mentality within AFL circles and the code of silence that goes into protecting bad behaviour of players at football clubs is unhealthy and perhaps it'll take more women or teammates to speak out to slowly reduce incidents or encourage players to seek out help because of the risk of public exposure.

...

How that is achieved I don't know but there is a level of secrecy and protection attached that only encourages behaviour far from healthy because it goes unnoticed by the wider public and the cycle keeps continuing season after season.

Gilmore might agree with you, though it sounds like his gambling problems were worse than most (starting at 16, 6-figure sums lost).
I agree that the AFL's ties to gambling are disturbing. Some of the league's actions to protect gambling interests have even distorted the whole competition.

The environment at a football club is concerning. Everything around footy is dictated on betting. How do you stop something when all you are surrounded by is gambling?

...

The clubs organise counselling and do all that, but the thing with Jake is that he needed more, Gilmore says. Whatever he got it wasnt enough.

They had a duty of care to look after Jake and I think if they had listened to me they would have been able to help him a lot more."

We were quick to rule him out and given our struggles up forward off suggest the club knew a bit.

An Ess friend of mine doesn't want his club to touch him.

There's a lot of baggage with this one.

Avoid.

I wonder whether the club still has a pretty good relationship with Beveridge, given his past employment.

I really struggle with all these young women who know he has a fiance and kids, but still root him, take pics of it, and send them to his missus. To prove a point or something? Confused

takes two to Tango. I'm not trying to justify his behaviour by any stretch, If I was a friend or family of his ex I'd happily beat shit out of him on pure principle, I just don't get the mindset of these women who'll willingly be a celebrity cumdump and brag about it.

I couldn't care less what he does off field, he is a great forward . Let's recruit him. I want Barry Hall as our assistant coach and would be happy getting some mongel back into our game plan .

I would be really disappointed if we didn't have a good hard look at Stringer. He has serious potential, is young enough to grow up quickly and after the latest article would be going at fire sale price.

His issues aren't simply a result of immaturity, though. Addictions, etc. are not things you just grow out of.
Is our club really better able to help him than the Dogs?
