Mark Robinson stated on AFL 360 that tomorrow (August 3) a back page story would be in the Herald Sun about the Pies and Jake Lever of Adelaide.
He's a very good player - 21 years of age, tall, pretty agile, goes in hard and a good mark. Originally from Calder Cannons. Cemented his spot as Adelaide's number one CHB.
I say YES !

As I posted elsewhere, the pub talk is Lever to the Pies, Gibbs to Crows and our first rounder to Blues ( plus steak knives in the shuffle )
Who knows but his partner is a teacher and she has already returned back to Vic, so the assumption is that he is coming back home and will sign with a Vic club.

They might ask for pick 6 plus Scharenberg as a similar type replacement.

They may settle for pick 6 plus Aish to bolster there midfield depth.

no way would i give pick 6 AND Scharenberg. give the berg 40 more games and people will be talking straight swap. trust me.

i wouldnt give up scharenberg, unless he is treated as an elite top end player. Otherwsie we are trading him low.

lever for scharenberg seems fair. Adelaide will know this. maybe a third runder to allow for the fact that the berg still needs another season to confirm his elite status

We MUST use our pick 6 on an elite talent.

Lever is an elite talent in the making.

We wont be getting him without parting with a 1st round selection.

Gibbs will be 29 by the start of next season so I can't see Adelaide being prepared to hand pick 6 over to Carlton unless they get something extra in return.

Perhaps Collingwood first round. Adelaide 2nd round to Carlton.

Lever to Collingwood.

Gibbs and Carlton 2nd round to Adelaide (which would be a big upgrade of likely 14+ places)

I would want not a lot for Gibbs. A fringe player and second round would do it. But a high second round,

Firstly Lever was pick 14 so any demands more than a single first round pick or an equivalent rated player would be massive overs.
Let's not make the mistake we made with Treloar and over pay.
Adelaide got pick 9 and a player for Dangerfield.
For mine pick 6 is to high for Lever but if that's what we have then we need to fashion a different way to get the deal done.
Lever is a talent no doubt but if he decides to come home he's no use to the Crows anyway.
There will be other clubs bidding on him and we can't get into a pissing match again.
Gibbs could be the smokey in this. If Carlton believe he's going next year as a free agent then they may just look for a direct swap with the Crows (Lever for Gibbs and maybe they exchange a second round pick)
If anything that would make more sense to the Crows than dealing with us.
They get a ready made midfield player and the chance to draft a player early in the second round to develop.
Our deal pick 6 brings them no certainty they would still need time to develop any player they select with that pick.
I would look to keep pick 6 and deal them players they can use immediately.
Scharenberg is off the table no way under the sun we trade away him he has way to much upside
So what do we have they need.
Aish is a Adelaide lad and not getting game time here so he makes sense.
We have a few extra HBF types to many really or fringe midfielders so maybe look at a Langdon or Ramsay or Sinclair or Phillips & if needed throw in a exchange or upgrade of second round picks next year.
I would love to see us some how manufacture the deal whilst keeping our 1st round pick.
So maybe 2 players might be seen as a better option for them I'm only guessing.
Lever has to first nominate his preferred club (hopefully us) then we have to get the deal done and I wouldn't want to see us hand over our first round draft pick to the scum under any circumstances and take the chance of them landing a gem in the draft.
If we can get a deal done and keep our first round pick this would be huge to us.
Imagine a backline of
Mayanrd. Dunn. Howe
Scharenberg. Lever. Varcoe
Running around next season
Forward line could then be
Kirby. Reid. Elliott
Goldie. Moore. Faz

Spine
Dunn. Lever. Grundy. Moore. Reid.

Lever slipped to 14 due to injury as he missed (from memory) the entire season due to a knee reconstruction and it was his form the previous season as a bottom ager that got him selected. Even with this, he was considered the best key defender in the draft and phantom/mocks from 'experts' had him as high as top 5.

Earlier in the season I'd read a stat story headlined around Alex Rance being the 3rd ranked intercepter... it had Howe at 2 and Lever at 1. I'm not sure how this sits now though.

In trade, Lever will have a very high price.

I'd heard if he does go home, Melbourne are favoured as he has already met with the club and officials.

Lots of smoke and mirrors at this stage and impossible to gain any clear read, but the most likely scenario in my mind is he stays in Adelaide.

If he does want to go home, then every Victorian club should be kicking the tyres.

Where a player is selected originally in the draft has no bearing on his trade value once he's established a performance level in the AFL.

Would we trade Moore for pick 6 only?

If you answer no then why should Adelaide who would view the potential of Lever the equal of Moore.

Remember Rance wasn't the AA Rance at the same age either.

The three clubs that are into him are Dogs, Dee's and Pies.

He was very highly regarded as a top 5 pick in his first TAC year. He did his ACL very early in his second TAC draft year and understandably recruiters went a bit cold on him. I heard he would have gone later than 14 off the back of his knee but recruiters were so impressed with his attitude and professionalism to rehabbing, that he was the next pick for a few clubs when the Crows grabbed him at 14.
As for pick 6, this years draft falls away at around pick 6, so that pick is still a prize pick ( for mids ) Its probably a better pick than 2 first rounders in the teens because of the drop off in talent. There are a number of talls in this draft but with Sutherland choosing cricket, Ballendon being committed to Lions and Brander likely going before pick 6, means that Pies now have less of the best talls to pick from if they keep 6.
As for the Crows, when a player is out of contract and chooses to leave, the parent club automatically has less bargaining power and history shows the Crows are likely to get unders in this deal.

Lever is tracking towards elite. I would swap pick six for him in a heart beat and Gibbs is a perfect fit for the Crows. They are lacking quality outside mids and are in the premiership window. The whole deal makes sense to me but that alone, is also why it probably won't happen.

We can expect more stitches, after another anal bleed-out at trade time...
