You can't control what you're attracted to, you can control what you do about it.

Peter Gerald Scully is a prime example of why it is meant to hurt and humiliate. Torturing an 18 month old girl that he was certainly going to murder when he had made enough money. If you can find one scintilla of sympathy for him then I fell sorry for you.

I'd like to think I could find sympathy for anybody, but that's not really relevant to the link I posted — it's a piece on people who have this sexual orientation but don't act upon it.

Don't know much of him but based on that very short synopsis, nah **** him.

I'd like David's take on this.

Some decent jokes, some lame ones – are you sure you meant to post it in this thread? Confused

yeah, I'm sure.

he copped it big time after that routine, accused of condoning paedophiles, so i thought of this thread.

You mean Gervais, right? Yeah, it's a pretty dark routine that arguably makes light of child abuse, but in the end I think you can file it safely under the category of jet black or shock humour.

While this is easy to say, i think most of us have had the experience of finding it very hard to do when the powerful drug testosterone is doing all the talking in the brain. i know nothing about the power of paedophile urges, but if they are as potent as other sex urges, then anyone who resists them for a lifetime is a person of great character. I assume that no one would choose to be like that, and I always feel sorry for someone of otherwise good character who has this sickness. Still, I am afraid it is essential that anyone who indulges it is sorrowfully punished and then the person concerned be helped.

Scully is a rather different category to the paedophile who hates his impulses. There is clearly another level of moral evil involved there. If he is certainly guilty, I would happily see him hanged (and no, I do not mean metaphorically).

Ah, that makes more sense.

It's a pretty funny stand-up routine, but I think what's most interesting about it is that he's asking us to put ourselves in a child molester's shoes – something we're probably not used to doing because a) such people are usually portrayed as inhuman, and b) their crimes sicken us so much and are so taboo that to even imagine what it'd be like if we had those inclinations is disturbing.

But, yeah, I think that's kind of what we have to do: we have to realise that this is an unfortunate fluke of genetics and psychology that affects some people, and that those people have no choice in the matter (their only choice is whether or not to act on it). Once we can access that imaginative empathy, it might become possible to stop demonising and start helping. So, as much as some people might have seen this as a tasteless stand-up routine, I reckon it was kind of brave for him to go there.
