I was in a museum in Tampa Florida earlier this week, in a room dedicated to the Spanish-American war (over Cuba) when I saw sheet music for the song "Goodbye Dolly Gray", more famously known as the Collingwood theme song. Almost made me burst into song.

It was also used in the Boer War, and in the movies Lawrence of Arabia and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Love Florida, didn't get to Tampa, but we drove from Miami to Cocoa beach, then on to the space centre, and Orlando. did you get to the rocket garden?

Think you used enough dynamite there Butch?

One of my fave films.

I think the song also appears in "Alfie" starring Michael Cane.

Quick question, does the museum mention the use of the song today?

No, Side by Side, didn't really see much of Orlando or east coast.

Did get to the Salvadors Dali museum in St Petersburg, and I am going to the NHL and will wear Magpies shirt.

Oh cool. I wore my Pies jumper to an NHL game in Vancouver and a guy working at the stadium yelled our GO PIES and he said he couldnt believe he saw a Collingwood top.

Which teams are you going to see?

Lightning v Oilers, won by Lightning 4-1, including a junk time goal when the Oilers benched their goalie. Oilers also had a goal disallowed for offside when the score was 3-1 and a fair bit of time remaining. The offside was called well after the play, on review. It took ages for the NHL officials to decide - apparently this is the first season that challenges are allowed, and it reminded me of the first time the AFL had goal reviews.

Didn't really like the experience, too loud and brash. At times the game seemed incidental to all of the entertainment and advertising. They also have forced breaks every few minutes for the TV ads.

You would have seen one of my personal favourites, Jason Garrison.

TBL been somewhat disappointing this year after a Cup run in 2015. You would have missed seeing Steven Stamkos, who is one of the better players going round, but he's had a knee op.

I've always felt a bit funny about hockey teams in places like Florida. But Tampa did win the cup in 2004 iirc.

I'm still waiting to see my team win one. Love the game. Second only to AFL for me.

So, you are a Lightning fan? I was surprised by how polite they were to the opposition. It was funny seeing people at the hockey with shorts and flip-flops on.

We were 4 rows from the glass, so really close and could feel the contacts the players made and the speed of the puck.

I remember being in British Columbia in 07 when the Oilers lost the playoffs and also in 12 when the Canucks lost the playoffs.

We went with locals who are Denver and Minneapolis fans (whatever those teams are). Didn't see any other Collingwood shirts.

No, I go for Vancouver. Garrison played for them not too long ago. My mother was raised in Vancouver, so I've been following them for some time. I actually purchased a Garrison jersey whilst in Vancouver in 2014 and about a week later, I was back in Melbourne and he was traded to Tampa Bay. Couldn't believe it.

Thats one positive about games in Florida. You can usually get very good seats.

I was also in Vancouver in 2012 when they had won the Presidents trophy, but lost to 8th seed L.A. in the first round. Vancouver had lost the final the year before, but were red hot favorites to win it in 2012.

L.A. of course, went on to knock out the 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranked teams and ended up beating New Jersey to win the Stanley Cup. Shocked

Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild. Not keen on either lol. Razz

It's always funny to see AFL gear when over seas. When in Seattle, a guy yelled out "Go Hawks" to me. I've got a couple tops here with me in London, but I haven't really worn them.

Getting back to Dolly Gray, I believe the song also appears in the title sequence for an XBox 360 game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzgXkf6ohLY

Here's the bar fight scene in "Alfie": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQAlpiB3_FQ

I believe the scene from Butch and Sundance also has a bit of a ruckus in the bar as the song is playing. And I think that's when the lawmen are trying to round up people from the town to help hunt them down. But no one wants a bar of it and some bloke ends up trying to sell bicycles instead.

Some other places Goodbye Dolly Gray has popped up:

Lawrence of Arabia: The scene is towards the end of the movie as a truck load of soldiers are singing the song (time stamp 2:57) - https://youtu.be/9ZoMimSCOKM?list=PLflTBqxtTdivK-xh5Sz-RjzqkP8uPbgtI&t=181

War Horse: In the stage play they they have the song. The youtube link has been taken down but from the twitter account: https://twitter.com/warhorseonstage/status/699188381532692481

It's always an awesome suprise when you unexpectedly hear the song! Very Happy

Yeah, Butch and the kid, great movie, two fantastic actors. I also love the line at the end, by Butch, when surrounded by 100 Mexican soldiers, he says to the kid, "Listen kid, when we get outa this we go to Australia, they've got plenty of Banks in Australia, just waiting to be hit " Laughing

I see your location is London, England. Out of interest do you ever attend any UK Ice Hockey?

I ask as I'm a fan of the Guildford Flames.

Ha! Funny you mention that. The first team I saw was MK Lightning Vs Guildford Flames.

Flames won the game.

I've been mostly following the MK Lightning and have attended a handful of their games. Possibly going next Saturday.
