Let's imagine that you are a recruiting manager from out of state. You've just been told to review our list and re-sign whoever you want.

You know nothing at all about any of our players. Nothing at all.

You don't even know how old they are or how many games they have played. All you know is what you saw on a TV replay of the practice match against Essendon. You weren't at the game, you don't have any stats, you often don't know if any given player didn't feature on the screen for a whole quarter because he couldn't get near the ball or just because he was on the bench. Guess as best you can from the footage. Remember, this is the only information you have. You just have to call it on what you saw.

You have 16 senior spots to fill, plus 4 rookies. Pick them in order. Your time starts now.

1: De Goey – Strong, good hands, breaks tackles, very good inside, knows where the goals are. Clearly the best midfielder in the side. Automatic first pick.
2: White – Best big man out there by a long, long way. Fast, mobile, good hands, good kick. Cox was the only other tall to really shine.
3: Elliott – More X-factor than a porn studio. Unike most X-factor players, does all the regular things too.
4: Smith – The best defender in the side on the day. Cool, understated, effective.
5: Greenwood – Solid core of the midfield group. Obviously an essential player.
6: Crisp – Good size, quick, plays inside and outside, gets plenty of it, nice kick.
7: Aish – Standout class. Looks young, keen, willing to have a go. Mostly plays outside but very talented inside. Bit of a punt to pick him so high but I like what I saw.
8: Sidebottom – With De Goey, Greenwood and Crisp, did the bulk of the inside stuff, and did it well. Looked solid and experienced. Up forward, looked a different player - less reliable but more dangerous.
9: Cox – Did well without being outstanding. Doesn't get any shorter in the last quarter. Looks a bit raw but has genuine talent. Clearly the best ruckman in the side, and has decent skills for a big bloke. Will only get better.
10: Phillips – Be interesting to see his stats as he seems to get a lot of it. Finds space, a bit sloppy with the pill in hand.
11: Daicos – A kid who bleeds class. Could be anything. Take him.
12: Scahde – Yet another tall with some class, but no dominator. Looked as though this was maybe his third senior game, so he might get a lot better. Or might not. Another Corey Gault? Or another Adam Goodes? Looked more like a Gault on the night, but worth a signature.
13: Moore – Obviously has talent, but monstered by a pretty average full-back. Like his pace and love his second efforts. Not up to key forward duties at this stage, but could be a handy third tall.
14: Varcoe – Messed up a lot of opportunities in the first half, was inclined to delist him by half-time. Second half was quite a lot better.
15: Maynard – One of the better small/medium defenders. Worth a punt.
16: Sinclair – Looked competent before he got injured. Nice turn of pace, not afraid to take a risk. Undecided about this player.
R1: Dunn – Did nothing, looked a complete dud until the second half, when he did some very nice things drifting into attack. Didn’t impress as a defender, too big to be a wingman, can't quite see him as a key forward. Possibly worth a rookie contract?
R2: Hoskin-Elliott – Spectacular flashes of talent, but needs to do more than be brilliant in 10-second bursts two or three times a game. Rookie contract, see how he goes.
R3: Keeffe - Not a ruckman. Probably not a forward either. Got better as the game went on. Try him out as a tall defender. Rookie contract.
R4: Howe – Not the worst defender. Worth considering.
Blair – One-paced. Knows what he's trying to do but fumbles. Better in the second half and got some pill. Would dominate in the VFL but not at this level.
Goldsack – Quick, physical, tall. No ball skills. Not interested.
Mayne – A good (lucky?) goal aside, did nothing much, no obvious signs of talent. No thanks.
Fasolo – A game of two parts. Three-quarters of the time he looked lazy and uninterested, every now and then he tried to do something flashy and failed. Improved a bit in the last quarter, but not enough.
Ramsay – Doesn't look up to it at this level.
Scharenberg – Looked a bit slow to be an AFL player.

Just a reminder: this is purely on the practice match as shown on TV. In reality, for example, I'm a big fan of Ramsay (who I listed second-last) and wouldn't rate Scahde anywhere near as high as 12. In reality, I know that Ramsay and 'Berg were playing first up after knee reconstructons and did pretty OK considering that. Howe, Sidebottom, and Moore are better players than they seemed on the night; I doubt that Philllips, Cox, and Daicos are as good as they seemed. (But all three are young, so they may well be before too long.)

Having now watched the replay right through, I feel qualified to comment. The OP is way too stimulating to languish unread.

1: De Goey – Looked like a bull, and an A-Grade mid on this showing.

2: Cox - developing ruckman, whose height causes a lot of problems and wins him frees. Could be anything.

3 : Crisp - breakaway mid, quick, tall, hard-working, can open defences up.

4: Phillips - got a lot of the ball, might need a little time to perfect technique, but the boy's a goer.

5 : Sinclair - heard a rumour he was injury prone but I'm not allowed to take that into account. Based on the 2.5 quarters he was on, this boy is quick, courageous and capable of turning defence into incisive offence. The goal-saving tackle where he did his hammy was spectacular and typical of his work.

6. Hoskin-Elliott : could be anything. Did a few things, most of them suggesting possible game-breaking talent.

7. Daicos - only on a short time, but greased the ball out of several scrums to Collingwood players and created at least two goals. Looks like real class.

8 : Sidebottom - looked to be going at half-pace, but got a bit of it and didn't waste a scrap

9 : Greenwood - industrious mid who knows what it is about. Not a game-breaker, but a working-class backbone.

10 : Elliott - promising player, has a leap, but did not dominate

11 : White – should do more for his height and shape, but likely looking modern CHF type.

12 : Schade - looks raw, but a big lad with mobility, and might make it as a defender.

13. Keefe - See Schade

14: Ramsay – Gets a lot of it, looks to have some toe, started well and slackened a bit as the game wore on. Think there might be something there

15. Moore - Kicked up a lot of dust, but didn't travel far. Looked likely a lot of the time, didn't really achieve much despite expensing a lot of effort. Suspect he smaller ground did not suit him. Worth a punt.

16: Varcoe – Pacy outside type who did some nice things. Backbone player.

R1 : Maynard – Small/medium defender, nothing much differentiates him, but he did not do a lot wrong and probably a good journeyman footballer.
R2 : Blair - hard in-and-under player who won’t win games but created a few opportunities for others
R3: Howe – Made a big leap but dropped it. Played a role and wouldn't rule him out
R4: Aish – got a few kicks, did not do much of particular note, but got enough of it to suggest he is worth a punt

Goldsack - Physical, tall and seemed to know where the ball might be going. Sprayed it a bit. Sprayed it a lot, actually. But did a few nice things and seemed
Mayne – Nothing to note, really.
Fasolo – Wants to be a star, but likely to end up valeting cars, from what I saw.
Dunn- big boot on the boy, but seemingly a tiny brain. Made a few howlers in the back half and doubt he thinks fast enough for this level.
Scharenberg – did nothing of particular note in his limited game time.

Pretty much on the money MW, except....

Maynard is a bull and our best rebound defender.

Aish, despite obvious skill, too often gets where the ball aint.

Shade, shows some promise, but doesn't seem to have the physicality to make it as a key defender. Still, he's worth persevering with.

Cool Cool
