Post subject: Twilight Grand Final inevitable according to Gillon | |
|
The AFL hasn't ruled out changing the starting time for the Grand Final despite reports earlier in the week that the Grand Final would remain during the day for at least another year.
We've had this discussion before on Nicks, but it appears that a change may be coming sooner than we expect so it's worth discussing. It's also known that Eddie is in favour of change.
Quote: | Twilight Grand Final inevitable: Gillon McLachlan
THE END is nigh for the day Grand Final, concedes AFL chief Gillon McLachlan.
On Thursday, McLachlan said the AFL would not "rush" a decision on the Grand Final's start time.
However, on Friday McLachlan gave the strongest indication yet that the day Grand Final was on its last legs, telling radio station Triple M that a twilight start was "inevitable".
"More and more people think it's a chance to enhance the event," McLachlan said.
"You're not pushing it back late at night. Kids could still go to a twilight game. It would be a bigger, bolder experience and clearly it would have an impact on television."
But McLachlan would not say when a shift from the traditional 2.30pm opening bounce would be made.
"If you took a long-term view, it's inevitable, but it's a question of when and it's to do with the composition of the commission, the presidents and others in the industry who have their views."
Ahead of the 2017 fixture announcement, McLachlan said there was "plenty of time to work through a process and make a call".
"It feels like it's been a busy year ... we just haven't considered it – (we need) a considered process to make a change."
In a poll conducted by AFL.com.au, a day Grand Final was favoured by most voters, however, 47 per cent of voters felt a twilight start time would add to the spectacle. |

Indeed. The idea that its a game/competition is long, long gone. Fixtures that are compromised [we play the hawks twice in 6 weeks wtf], trade rules that are bent on the day, whole drafts given to new teams. Rugby passes instead of handballs allowed to speed up the game, holding the ball calls in finals rarer than Kevin Bartlett handballs.
It's just a product to the AFL commission now. Glow and Show. _________________ Get back on top. |

Night grand final is totally going to happen in the future, and often if not all - get used to the idea now... it's going to happen. (my own personal opinion is irrelevant, this time |

I'd be fine with it as a one-off, but it'd be a shame if it became a permanent thing – and I think we all know that's exactly what will happen. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

This is all about the corporates wanting a night Grand Final and a bigger TV audience.
A twilight Grand Final is a "softer" pathway to a night Grand Final.
In the NRL after 92 day Grand Finals, they shifted the kick off time to twilight/night Grand Finals.
Night Grand Finals are also not good for young children.
NRL Grand Final kick off times:
3pm 1908 - 2000
5pm 2008 - 2012
7pm 1997*, 2001 - 2007, 2013 - present _________________ Sydney Collingwood Supporters Club

I believe that the day after the NRL night final is a public holiday. All those kiddies can sleep in...and parents don't go to work with a hangover _________________ Magpies forever.

So with a night Grand Final, what do you do after you win?
Will there be a club function at Crown etc - it would have to start at midnight, players would appear when....1.00am? Won't happen.
Do we keep the on-ground celebratory concert for fans? Again it would have to start at midnight....so it will be scrapped.
When we last won the players also got on stage for us at AAMI Park - it was fantastic. That won't happen.
So I guess when you win a night grand final you just go home. The millions watching on telly then change channels or just go to bed. |

I am not a fan of the idea, but it has become clear for many years the AFL doesn't care how the fans feel about anything so they will do it to appease Seven and their corporate clowns.
That seems to be all they worry about these days anyway, the fans don't matter it's become painfully clear. _________________ Ðavâgé

I voted not to have a grand final at all. I'm all for the team who supporters feel they should be premiers all be given a flag. In today's society of trying to appease all minority groups like StKilda supporters North supporters etc we should award 18 flags each year. Could you imagine the sales of herald Suns with 18 team photos holding a premiership cup aloft ! Imagine all the t-shirt sales, the food and beverage sales the merchandise sales claiming a 20 peat !!
Now that would keep the corporates happy |
