Post subject: Leading Teams finally given the flick. Good riddance.Reply with quote

I've been waging a campaign for a few years now warning of the damaging effect the Leading Teams consultants were having on our team's morale and spirit. Amongst the management academic community, this junk 'T-Group' methodology has been considered damaging and destructive, since it first appeared as a fad amongst gurus, making a lot of money peddling this rubbish, on the west coast of the US in the 60s.

I have always been concerned that while some players, perhaps even some teams, may respond positively to this mumbo jumbo, there was a greater risk that it would damage team spirit and destroy the confidence of some players.

So I am very pleased to read today that Collingwood has sacked these bozos from our club. This decision has been long over due. I suspect it is a decision made by Gubby Allen, and I look forward to the re-building of our team spirit going forward.

Gubby is not a yes man. He has seen the poison that these parasites inflict in a footy team environment. The personalities of every individual cannot be reprogrammed and what were or should I say who would think otherwise. Crickey we may even start to play footy like we mean it now.

Is it true the only reason you wanted them gone is so you can deliver some EST training to the pies?

I said when Gubby arrived he wouldn't be just a female sports administrator it didn't suit his skill set.
He's always been a bit of a old school footy person and he wouldn't stand for anyone trying to turn players into robots.
I understand the premise of what they try to do and maybe on some level it's ok but when your dealing with such a young impressionable group it can have the reverse effect and I think we've seen that.
We've seen kids to scared of backing themselves and making mistakes because of what they might think the group may say later.
Successful footy team and clubs all one have common factor they play for each other and back each other even when mistakes are made.
I hope Bucks understands this
I've got a sneaky suspicion Gubby may be doing a lot of work with the coach in regards to backing himself and his players.
I would be happy to see us lose a game taking it on being exciting and yes making some mistakes along the way instead of trying to play a safety first style which ultimately leads to a error
The last half of the season I saw a drastic shift in the perceived attitudes of the players trying to play fast and furious football. I liked it
Yes they made some errors and we all bemoan that but when they got it right it looked damn good
If I could get the players together for a 10 minute talk all I would tell them and reinforce is "your in the AFL system because you can all play footy go out run and carry and back yourself and your team mate at all costs. Make a mistake move on from it quickly and then try again to be courageous and make the big play. Always want to be the man your team mates want to play with"

While the majority will sit there and go "oh well" because they haven't got a clue what they do, or if they're good or bad at it, or if this is a positive or negative step.

Especially the ones with the Hawks, Swans, Dees and Saints as their second teams, frees LT to put more work in with them.

Exactly. None of us really know why it has/hasn't worked at the Pies.

Cam I'm guessing here only but the way I view it is as follows
Leading teams works well in a club where there is a large strong core of experienced players who don't have the concerns of being dropped after one or 2 average or poor performances. In a club like ours where the list profile age wise and experience wise doesn't have that level of self security and with so many players vying for a spot or new to the club it wouldn't be something that would sit well with many individuals.
Could you imagine Smith in his first season feeling comfortable raising a issue with say Brown about his game or Aish telling Sidey or Pendles that he was free for a pass and they didn't spot him up ?
I'm not knocking leading teams I just don't think it fitted our requirements as we thought it would. We tied it it didn't work we move on. I would be happier to see the club take that money saved and bring is some specialist coaches for kicking or structure teaching to the young players.
Go out and find the best kick we can (outside the coach) and have them work with individuals outside the normal practise hours on general kicking skills.
Hire some like Monkey away from the Hawks and work him with Grundy White Cox Keefe or a Frawley to work with our backs or Carey to work with the forwards on a needed basis. Not only could they learn they will also be exposed to some of the best players of there eras and be able to pick there minds on things. Imagine a case were each line could sit down and watch video of the previous game and have the little nuisances dissected for them without fear of being dropped at selection.

Sidey would just have told Aish that he needed to be (1) no more than 7.3 metres away and (2) positioned directly between Sidey and the nearest point to Sidey on an imaginary line down the centre of the ground if he wanted the ball passed to him.
