Max Walker, the tangle-armed Australia seamer of the 1970s, has died in Melbourne after succumbing to cancer. He was 68.
He was a key member of the successful Australian Test teams led by Ian and Greg Chappell.
Walker played 34 Tests for Australia, bowling into the wind opposite Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson in the memorable home summers of 1974-75 and 1975-76, when England and the West Indies were lain to waste. Max Walker passed away today.

How many times have I sat at the G watching tangles tearing in, giving heart and soul for the green and gold.
There was a saying about tangles that if you put a native tracker onto his runup the diagnosis would be "four men walk here"
He may have wandered all over the shop with his foot placement in his runup but his heart ran straight and true, pumping green and gold.
Farewell Maxy - knockem flat son. |

Maxy's late out-swinger was the delivery that proved what a star Gordon Greenidge really was - almost no-one else in world cricket could lay the bat on it but Gordon's reflexes were just good enough for him to get the edge behind the wicket!
I also remember watching Maxy play 2nd ruck for Melbourne against us at least half a dozen times.
A fine all-round sportsman and a genuinely likeable fellow.
RIP big fella. |

Very sad news. A very likeable man who will be fondly remembered by those he was acquainted with.
