process post how it works please

points bidding system. each draft pick is allocated a points value on a sliding scale. in very simple terms a combination of 2nd and 3rd round picks is likelt to be worth more than a 1st round pick on its own.
e.g. pick 1 (1st round) is worth 6000 points; pick 19 (2nd round) is worth 5000 and pick 31 (2nd round) is worth 4200. if a club puts the number 1 on the table (which it is highly improbable) a club can match it by offering its two 2nd round picks (as per example). so, 9200 points > 6000 points.
that's my understanding and happy to be corrected. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

^ this is why we don't need to really trade back into the draft. we pick up daicos and brown and a few late rounders. we should have the points to get them otherwise trade a player or two for second and third round picks will help us get there. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

2nd, 3rd & potentially 4th round picks will be enough for Brown/Daicos.
Later rounds will be used to elevate Keefe & Thomas.
Our ability to draft early or trade this year will come from Witts, Cloke & maybe Williams. |

Father son picks also attract a 20% discount on the points required compared to say a academy pick _________________ "You must be a parking ticket, cuz you got fine written all over you" Glen Quagmire |

The bidding system was further refined in 2015. Under the current system:[9]
Each draft pick is assigned a value (with No. 1 starting at 3000 points, declining exponentially until No. 74 which has no value), which is regressed from historical player salary data.
During the draft, any club may bid for a father-son eligible player with any draft pick.
The father's club, if it wishes to select the son, must then use its next one or more draft picks until the total points value of the surrendered picks adds up to the value of the draft pick used by the bidding, less a discount – which is either 20% of the bid value or 197 points (equivalent to pick No. 56), whichever is greater. Any points left over after reaching the bid value result in the draft pick being shuffled down the order.
The club which originally made the bid then has the next selection in the draft.
The same bidding process has also been used since 2015 by the New South Wales and Queensland clubs to gain access to their states' academy players. |

Haven't they just modified the system so that clubs can no longer trade for more picks than they have places on their list? Not sure if that affects us or not. It's all too bloody confusing if you ask me! _________________ Side By Side Forever |

There is something along the lines clubs must turnover X number of players each year and that's how draft picks are allocated essentially. But there is also the rookie categories to be used by clubs
I do remember something about clubs can't stockpile draft picks they can't use meaning if we have 6 vacancies in our list we aren't allowed to have 8 picks unless we are able to use them in father son bidding. I think any unused picks after round 4 are voided by memory |

Academy players get a discount as well unless I'm mistaken.
Edit: just checked, as outlined below.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-05-21/new-bidding-system-introduced-for-fatherson-and-northern-academy-players
Clubs nominating a player as a father-son or academy draftee will be forced to use their existing draft selections to match the points value of the pick used by the club bidding for the player.
The AFL has settled on a maximum discount of 20 per cent for academy and father-son players in the first round. After that, the discount will be fixed at 197 points - the discount for pick 18.
If a player is bid on after pick 56, then the nominating club need only use its last pick in the draft to list the player.
The discount was initially proposed to be 15 per cent discount for father-son players and 25 per cent for academy prospects, but club feedback saw the discount set at 20 per cent for both categories in their recommendation to the Commission.

Yes, I heard that the AFL were not happy with the loophole that GWS exploited last trade period. These changes will affect us as we now need to trade valuable players to earn high draft picks if we want to snare both players. |
