Eventually decided to not go last night. My daughter is expecting and we didn't want her out in the cold so we sat home and watched it. For the sake of Thompsoc, the fact that we did not attend last night (which is rare) had nothing to do with Eddie or Buckley for that matter.

fair enough.
I go just to stir them!!!
only kidding.

I reckon the crowd for last night's game between Geelong and St Kilda was actually worse in relative terms. Here you had two Victorian teams playing indoors at Etihad, one of which was on top of the ladder, and they could only draw 28,000.Very poor turnout.

Collingwood's average crowd numbers over the last 7 seasons ....

2010 - 63,917 (Premiership year with a replay)
2011 - 60,959
2012 - 56,635 (New Coach)
2013 - 53,754
2014 - 47,647
2015 - 47,953
2016 - 48,219 (after 13 games)

That's a drop of 15,698 per game since 2010, down 25%
Sad numbers and even worse when you consider Australia's population has grown by 10% over the same period.

The AFL average (all clubs combined) has dropped from 38,417 to 33,000 (14%) over the same period.

May as well get the suburban grounds going again.

Great stats
So it is both long term across the afl
but also particularly steep for us.
As someone said outside the ground on friday night
was an official saying only general seating is available on level 4.
WTF!

I never supported live football being broadcasted in Victoria for matches being played in Victoria unless the ticketing for the match was sold out. as the SEN article mentions live football as one of the key reasons for the drop off in crowd numbers over the years.

Collingwood's average crowd numbers in the last 7 seasons appears to coincide with the decline of the team with each passing season which isn't all that surprising.

I think if we improved and became a top 8 team again, the crowd average would have a comfortable increase.

Live TV would have to have an impact on attendance, particularly when it's freezing.

I always find Friday nights hard to go to after a week at work, coming home tired, getting changed, train etc. I was more than happy to stay home and watch it live on Foxtel. No queuing for drinks and no freezing my balls off.

If there was no live football and the weather was relatively mild for a Friday night game, would you still attend Stui?

That's fascinating.

It's not scientific, but my contact with people over the last 5 years would indicate a general disengagement and disillusionment with the game. Rule changes, the Essendon saga, the crap pre-game razamataz, etc, etc.

The AFL has been creating the impression of record crowds year after year, but those figures contradict that. If those numbers are right then they're quite disturbing.

Record crowds only because they added two teams, ie one extra game per week!

Live TV coverage would never have stopped me in the old days but, now, there's just constant noise, so it's ceased to be a sociable pastime - you can't actually chat to the people you're with - and most of the "crowd noise" comes contrived over the speakers. It's actually unbearable. Since I spend many of my evenings watching live heavy-metal bands, I suspect the noise at the football bothers many others even more than it bothers me.

No live TV and a mild night I'd be much more inclined to go.
