Tannin is definitely the one I'd ask about that.

Get him back from his bird trip, someone!

^He's very good on those things generally, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's already looked into it, is what I mean.

I read that as "bad trip" 3 times and thought Tannin must be off on a Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas style bender across the Nullarbor or something. Laughing

First thing you want to check is how your electricity provider will deal with the solar. On sunny days you'll generate more electricity than you use from the panels but typically use more at night when the panels don't work.

If the panels are hooked up so that excess power goes back into the grid as such, some providers give credits for that, some ignore it and some actually charge you service fees. My uncle up bush spent thousands putting the solar on his house and IIRC his electricity bills went up.

Basically, do the research and seriously check the fine print

I have solar, I love it, total energy bills for last 12 months approx $300. Excess power is sold back to the grid under a generous arrangement that has been down scaled for new customers. The trick is to use your appliances during the day. Also look at what type of hot water service you have and work out the most efficient way to use it. My place is well insulated and has reverse cycle air con and although I am energy conscious I am comfortable, and I do live in a relatively mild climate (for now)

My parents got in Qld and were getting the electric cheap. The providers complained it was costing them money and they didn't want to provide the rebates anymore. My dad asked what if he turned off the power from the grid and apparently they can't. So some overses company keeps the power generated by solar and at a cost to the homeowner. They got shafted by the govvernment on the greywater recycling system too. On top of that they now have to pay water rates when live on tanks and have no access to water otherwise.

Haha. Someone help bring Tannin back from his bad trip! He's being mauled by rodents with shrill American accents!

Nice info from Nicksters there. I shall add you all to my next recommendation of people to speak to! (Tannin can head back to his bad trip!).

TP, the above accords with my understanding of the economics and policy at the mo. If you were in Germany, where it's done properly, you wouldn't have to be so cautious. But don't let that deter you (which I know it won't given your general tenacity).

As ever in Aus, where the energy transition is messed up by inconsistent government leadership, dirty brown coal, and a general anti-technology sexual fetish, a lot falls on you to do the research to sort out the good from bad companies.

And make sure some rubs-his-old-fella-in-coal-nightly idiot like an Abbott can't arise at state and federal level to mess up even the good schemes.

Yeah I found a website by some guy who genuinely seems to care about the scam situation. I signed up for three quotes and he sent me an email that's personalised to the point it's not a straight generated email. I used his questions and anti scam cheat sheet on the guy last night. Very helpful! He also provided links about good and bad panels, German and fake German produced panels and the thingy that makes it work. Going to get a quote from our builder friend/partners solar guy also. Cheers
