A lot of it comes down to motivation, self-discipline and metabolism. Once you leave the world of ultra-competitive sport, there's a big motivator gone for everyone.

You have to remember that most AFL players, including those who look the most 'ripped' right now, aren't naturally fitness junkies. It's a means to an end (that is, being a good AFL player). Once that motivation is gone, they're like the rest of us: a few will keep going to the gym on a daily basis, some will maintain an average figure, some will pack the weight on. It's really an issue for them and them alone.

I do think we focus too much on weight, though. It's not the be all and end all of health.

After you stop competitive sport at any level you still tend to keep similar eating habits for long enough to pork up. Takes a lot of discipline to diet down when you stop exercise because your caloric needs drop so much.

For the win.

Add to that, many footballers have spent years playing and training with pain killers and anti inflammatories masking busted body bits. When you don't have to push through that pain anymore for "work" the motivation to exercise would be slim.

I can't get that. I played sport, surfed, footy etc until my mid 30's. Putting on weight, feeling unfit was terrible.
The motivation is 'to look after yourself' I feel so much better and as long as my body lets me I'll keep running and watching what I eat (I believe in everything in moderation) because it just feels so good .... doesn't it???

I wanna be that old guy running a marathon at 75 and beyond.
