They're all social activists, where are the achievers, the heroes? Nagging politicians, no matter how just your cause, shouldn't qualify you for being Australian of the Year.

Give it to the Sydney bloke who rushed the terrorist unarmed to save his fellow hostages. Give it to a fireman or a scientist who discovered a breakthrough in their field (we still have those in this country somewhere right?).

If being a lobbyist is the height of our society then we're £$%$ed, I'd rather it go to Steve Smith for making a few centuries.

Can I just say, I genuinely don't give a fat rats clacker. If fact, you would not be able to imagine the immensity of the **** that I do not give.

Rosie Betty is a Joke getting Nominated.

She let the Husband that she knew was a A-Hole near him even when he had a Restraining Order against him.

I'm all for protecting children and would have been happy for an anti-abuse campaigner to be nominated, but Hetty Johnston is an atrocious representative for that cause. Just off the top of my head, she's campaigned to get respected artists like Bill Henson and Robert Crumb (!) tarred and feathered, distributed bizarre anti-abuse booklets in schools, supported damaging intiatives like publicly acccessible sex offender databases and spent a good deal of the last decade being a shrill, self-promoting rent-a-quote with a reputation for speaking first and thinking later. I think it says a lot about where Queensland is right now that she is that state's nominee.

As for Batty, I don't know that much about her, but it seems to me that her profile (brought about mostly by having suffered the tragedy of having a child murdered) far outweighs her actual work as a campaigner. Of course, she'd still be a better choice than many past winners (Steve Waugh, anyone?), but I'd rather see a low-profile candidate with many years of hard work in their field rewarded. Hence my preference for the Tas, WA or NT nominees.

Have to agree with you about Hetty Johnson, David. I suspect she hates all men. Rose Batty would be great, I think domestic violence is a major factor in our social problems, and unfortunately a lot of people have a casual attitude to it.

I reckon she'd happily hand back the award if she got her son back.

Awful what happened to her son and her but her response since is hardly worthy of this accolade over someone who has dedicated decades to there cause.

It appears an award now that best suits the needs of the political mood at the time.

While I know he doesn't personally select the winner I wonder how much sway the political party of the day holds.

Tone has been able to give it to an indigenous man and now a battered woman in his short time at the helm.

See you haters he isn't a misogynist racist as this award proves.

He's as socially progressive as they come.

Now for an openly gay Muslim climate scientist and he'll have the trifecta.

P.S-On a serious note any surprise that the gay rights activist didn't win.

That would have received a reaction like this I suspect.

I'm suspicious of political wrangling in this too. A few months of public speaking and political activism gets an Australian of the Year award? It's also one that is surprisingly hard to criticize because of the tragic nature of the murder of her son, it feels almost mean spirited to question her appointment, but an appointment like this should be about the superhuman work that someone has done in their field, whether through perseverance or talent or about some special act or meritorious bravery.

I had no respect to lose when it came to this award (Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh, Pat Rafter, Adam Goodes, Ita Buttrose, Allan Border, Mandawuy Yunupingu... give me a fkn break), but this appointment doesn't win any from me either.

I'm with you, TP. Good on you for standing up to ill-informed hate. Where is your "like" button? I just pressed it.
