I had a new dog, but gave him back, and now he's back again.

Yeah, not exactly the best looking member of the canine family, they wouldn't be in my top 5 if I was choosing to go out and get a new dog. This bloke was more or less a semi rescue mission and if he had of been able to play noice with other dogs, or at least mine, i would have taken him.

Most would only hurt someone by accident because they are just so big and think they aren't. Ugliness is in the eye of the beholder.

I had to take my 75Kg Rottweiler to the vet and told the them "My dog is cross-eyed. Is there anything you can do for him?"
The vet says, "Well, let's have a look at him."
So the vet picks the dog up while examining his eyes.
Finally he says "I'm going to have to put him down."
"What? Just because he is cross-eyed?"
"No, because he is really, really heavy

So the big boy is doing well up at my sons place. He's put on some condition and is happy. Saw him a few days before Christmas when I went up to the sons place along with some other people for a bit of a family BBQ.

Because the property has no fences he was originally tried in an old cubby house as a dog kennel but he just broke straight through that, so now he's tied up just outside the back door when everyone is inside and when the son is in the back yard, dog is off the chain and right beside him everywhere he goes.

He's a funny dog, so chilled out he's almost comatose most of the time, happy around any people, even ignores cats, but catch sight of another dog and he squares up straight away and goes from chilled to quivering ready to attack.

having a game of back yard cricket, had no interest in the ball, people going everywhere so he decides to just lay on his back in the middle of the yard with all 4 feet straight up in the air and doze off.

Laughing

That's a great story Stui. Hopefully he learns his home soon, and can be left of the chain. Either way, he didn't get euthanised at the pound, and he is loved and wanted, Cheers.

Ta Jo,

I had a feeling the boy and the dog would be good for each other, and it's working out well so far.

So today my son dropped the big bloke off here, since I no longer have another dog.

While he's put on some condition and is a lot healthier than when he went up there, the son told me a few weeks back that he'd be happy to hand him over to me if anything happened to my old bloke, as they just had to leave him tied up all the time. Another dog came in the yard when he was off the chain and he just went for it and it took a couple of them to hold him down.

While the boy and the dog have been good for each other, the boy recognised it wasn't fair on the dog to be tied up all day.

So the boy had to come over today anyway to grab a couple of wardrobes, so I asked him to bring the dog at the same time rather than making a special trip another time.

My yard is fully fenced, he's going no where. After settling him in, I went out and bought one of those shoulder harnesses to walk him with and a muzzle. That way I'll be able to take him for a walk in the evening and if some silly mutt decides to run up for a sniff he won't be able to bite it.

If I can't break him out of the habit by socialising him that way, at least he won't be able to cause any damage.

Well that was fun.

Put the shoulder harness on him, park looked empty and he was all excited at having some room so I took him for a walk in the park.

Half way round and Oh ****. Nana with 2 little kids, each kid had a dog on a leash, running full tilt round the park straight toward me.

Fuckityfuckfuckfuck. I didn't put the muzzle on him.

He spots the other dogs and squares up. As soon as he wants to head in that direction I pull back and say "NO" real loud. Seems to be working, he's getting the hint plus the kids heard me, looked at me and the dog, had a WTF moment and headed back the other way.

All good.

I head back around the other way toward the gate to my place. Then murphy strikes. Someone let the little white fluffy thing off it's lead and it does a bolt straight toward me. FMD. Little girl, all of about 6 or 7 is full tilt after it yelling but the LWFM has a death wish. or not.

About 4 metres short of us the LWFM puts on the brakes and stops still. Me yelling at it to far coff may have helped but the sight of big boy looking at it like a hungry man looking at a slice of pizza may have been the final trick.

Little girl gets there and pulls up short as well. I say to her, "Grab your dog and get it the **** away, now". She doesn't argue, grabs LWFM and scarpers. I take big boy back home. I reckon I'll be able to break him of this, he knows the word "No" so I can work with that.

Put him in the back yard, mouthful of beer to get the heart rate down and I went back into the park to talk to Nana and the kids. Explained to Nana, all good. Apologised to the little girl for swearing at her, and said her LWFM was very close to being eaten before she grabbed it, all good.

Lessons learned all round. He's a really friendly dog that's been starved of affection and room, and he is responding to having both really quickly. Socialising him is going to take a while, but we'll get there.

When I first met him I was told his name was Duke. I reckon it's bad luck to rename a dog or a boat, so I can work with that.

Although he also answers to Oi You and Fucknuckle. Wink

Someone is very lucky that their LWFM didn't end up looking like the aftermath of a featherdown pillow fight. Good luck with the brute, they say that dogs develop the personalities of their masters, so you never know....

one day a certain coingwood turned up to the vfl carrying what could easily have been mistaken for a ball of cotton wool. it was some little dog, not a chihuahua. lots of players asked about the walking handbag he was carrying and continued to mock him. a few weeks later, said footballer returned with a pug on leash.

pointless story but it is a story about someone having a dog then not having it and having another dog instead.

When I got my dog his name was Prince but i couldn't live with that...
I'd take him for a walk and the other dogs would tease him mercilessly!
So I changed it to "Dog formerly known as Prince" a.k.a "Dog Coyote".
When he left the farm his nick-name was D-C,... apparently the farmer didn't think much of his mental faculties.

He won't chase a ball or stick either.
He'll trot over and have look the thrown object but will lose interest pretty quick.
I guess he thinks if I don't want/need it, then it neither does he! Confused

Good luck with your dog Stui, big feisty dogs need a firm (and fair) hand.
I reckon he thrive under your tutelage!

(a Prince out-ranks a Duke, btw) Wink
