I don't think anyone seriously doubts that it was separatists using a Russian missile. It was a plane flying west to east; case closed, more or less. The Russian approach here is to deny everything and fool some neutral observers into thinking that there's just as much chance that the Ukrainian military were at fault (when in reality the likelihood of that is very, very slim).

Keep in mind that the Russian government are still officially denying that their troops have entered Ukraine or that their military invaded Crimea. Perhaps they think that if they keep lying for long enough they'll convince even themselves.

As for Abbott, a bit of responsible, intelligent commentary wouldn't go astray. He's supposed to be the Prime Minister, not some bloke at the pub after a few beers. I mean, "shirtfronting" Putin and "baddies vs baddies" in Syria... this is Kindergarten stuff. Can you imagine Barack Obama or David Cameron saying something like that? Does he think no-one else around the world is listening? I'm pretty sure Abbott's not that stupid, so why is he treating the Australian public like idiots?

Excellent post David! I completely agree with this.

Abbott's intentions weren't necessarily wrong but his execution was all wrong in approaching Putin on this issue. I'm still unsure of who's responsible for MH17. I still think pro-Russian separatists are responsible but all avenues need to be considered before we reach such a conclusion.

One thing that Putin isn't doing himself any favours in is his unwillingness to cooperate in the investigation of MH17 though and actually seek to find the truth rather than automatically blaming Ukraine for the tragedy.

The only shirtfront that's occurred is Obama on Abbott. Full frontal while he was meant to be looking.
