Is this why Jock Mchale is only credited with 7 premierships rather than 8 in the coaches table in the Age?

Surely even if Jock was incapacitated on the day, he coached the team for the entire year and the historic record should credit 1930 for both men, like a joint Brownlow

players arent considered premiership players if they dont make the 22 on grand final day.

Most people dont even consider Leon davis a premiership player because he only played in one of the 2 grand finals.

Totally different situation playing football to coaching football. The job of coach is mostly completed when the players take to the field. Absolute joke taking one of Joke McHale's premierships off him, if this is true.

Yes, but coaches also put in plenty of groundwork in past years as well as weeks, through training, recruiting, team building and so on. Perhaps Mark Thompson should be credited with a premiership in 2011? Allan Jeans probably played a huge role in Hawthorn's premiership win in 1988, too.

At the end of the day, you have to win a football game on a given afternoon to win a premiership, and that requires specific tactics, communication with players, management of injuries and so on. Good coaching on the day could be the difference between a flag and nothing. You can't really provide that if you're not physically there (well, at least, not in 1930!).

Oh, and there's still the basic problem that, even if you credit Jock with a premiership in 1930 (a relatively reasonable argument, even though I disagree with it), the game clearly shouldn't be included in his tally any more than Bolton's games this year would be included in Clarkson's tally. That's just ridiculous.

If game day is so important, what brilliant tactics did Malthouse employ in the first 2010 GF other than freeze in the coaches box, yell expletives and stare into the glass panel. What did he do to curb Lenny Hayne's influence around the ground other than tell Ball he had to play better. How did he allow Fischer to intercept so many entries into our forward line and what did he do to take Goddard out of the game?

The AFL has done this expecting us to all conveniently forget that Malthouse will in reality break the record in round 4 when Carlton plays St.Kilda in New Zealand as opposed to breaking the record when Carlton plays us on the Friday night in round 5.

The AFL has made a huge mistake overlooking Rush's achievement in the 1930 Grand Final and the influence he had over the playing group to win us that Premiership as the history books suggest.

Good on Mick for reaching the record but let's not pretend he's breaking it in round 5 either as the AFL's done this to promote the record as a way to get people to watch it on TV or to get people through the gates of the MCG. It's all motivated on making big money by using the record-breaking event as a way to entice people to be interested in the game whether they watch it or attend.
