Most high level jobs require pretty decent qualifications. They may be formal, demonstrated through real-world experience, or simply be apparent during the interviewing process. What qualifications, though, does it take to be a federal politician? I ask, of course, because of this:

Obviously I'm not much of a fan of the corruption, callousness and sheer opportunism of the current lot in power, but at least they have a semblance of intelligence and education and a vague idea of what it is they're doing. Is that too much to expect as a basic minimum? Or is the ability to elect idiots just a necessary evil of democracy?

Where is the proof they know what they are doing? Or that they are educated and intelligent ? They don't seem to have a plan at all. Government Ministers have also recently made extremely stupid comments, eg Hockey's howler about the driving habits of poor people, and Eric Abetz on a discredited link between breast cancer and abortion.

So you are proposing that we ban Abetz, Pyne, Abbott and .. um .. well, just ban the Liberal Party. Good idea.

Lambie strikes again!

http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/jacqui-lambie-questions-defence-officials-about-prospect-of-ebolainfected-suicide-agents-attacking-australia-20141022-119ve0.html

I'm with the Liberal backbencher on this:

Quote:
The Liberal MP said he had been motivated to join Parliament because of the "lack of quality of debate" and Senator Lambie's Ebola-infected terrorist-warning had taken that to a "new low".

Mr Laundy said Senator Lambie needed to realise that the job had to be taken seriously and when parliamentarians speak "your words carry weight"."

If you're not going to take to take the job seriously, resign and put someone in who is," said Mr Laundy.

Oh, and who could forget her defence of 'Validir' Putin the other day? ARGGGGH.

To think she is one of 226 federal parliamentary representatives in a country of 23 million makes my brain explode. Forget about intelligence, education or functional empathy glands: can we have someone sentient?

Compare the Kevin 07 to now era, both opposition and government to the Hawke/Keating/Howard years and it is sad, astounding and scary.

When you think of Peacock, Howard, Hewson, Beazley even Crean and Latham you see an effective opposition with a vision of their own. We have lost almost everyone effective in politics and those we haven't lost have to hide in the shadows. Julie Bishop is probably the best of the Coalition and his name escapes me but there is an outspoken Labor senator who is also very capable and yet no chance of leadership or being able to build a team. I'd add Penny Wong to that list too.

The small target, small minded, power hungry wanker is in charge of politics now.

From Wokko's list:

"When you think of... "

  • Peacock: regarded as a bit of a whishy-washy lightweight, in reality, more of a whishy-washy lightweight.
  • Howard: Stood for very little other than getting himself into office and staying there. What he did stand for, on the whole, was a relentlessly sneaky way of introducing unfair measures to pleasure his sponsors at the big end of town, but didn't have the moral courage / was too dishonest and sneaky (strike out whichever one you please) to say so outright.
  • Hewson: the pick of the recent Liberal bunch; like Fraser has grown wiser and more measured with the passing years. Might have made a half-decent PM back then, would make a great one today.
  • Beazley: yes, Beazley was a very good man with great honesty and genuine character. What a tragedy, both for Labor and Australia, that they dumped this fine man and quality leader, and replaced him with the appalling Kevin Rudd, who was and is a miserable failure on both counts.
  • even Crean: hmmmm no real opinion either way. Crean strikes me a a bit like Shorten: nothing much to admire but no massive downside either - i.e., a clearly better choice than the likes of Abbott or Rudd.
  • Latham. Vision, yes. Leadership capacity, see under K. Rudd. Latham was a daft choice as a party leader and would have been a serious liability in government.

You are probably just talking opposition leaders, but for completeness, I'll add a couple of others:

  • Gillard: excellent leader with brains, grit and courage. Played the terrible hand she was dealt very well - far better than any of those mentioned above could have done, except perhaps Beazley and Hewson. But a complete, miserable failure as a public speaker on TV. If she had learned to talk in public half as well as I bet you can, or WPT, or many others of us here, she's be PM today and the country would be in vastly better shape than it is.
  • Swan: one of the best treasurers we have ever had. Might have made a good leader but needed that magic extra bit of charisma. Rather like Shorten in that respect, or Howard.
  • Turnbull. Not the messiah. Not the worst possible choice. See under A. Peacock above.
  • Nelson. Who?
  • Bishop. Disgusting creature with an appalling moral history even by Liberal standards. Not fit to hold public office in any capacity.
  • Stui Magpie. Might do OK so far as the Tories go - which isn't very far at all - but unavailable for high office on account of his existing commitment to duty as god.

I was going to post this in the death penalty thread, but the end bit just takes things to a whole new level of stupid. Seriously, if it's this easy to buy a Senate seat, give me one. Or Stui, or Tannin, or Think Positive, or Jezza. Anyone but Lambie.

If pollies represent the people, then ask yourself what qualification you need to be a person.

Perhaps some minimum standards are in order.

Can't recite a 3 times table by age 9, life terminated.
Can't differentiate its and it's by age 15, life terminated.
