I have a gut feeling this kid could be a real surprise packet, ala Nick Maxwell, who got delisted by Norf, then came to us, and, well, you all know how far Maxy went, and what a great player he was.

I don't think Maxy was ever listed at another club prior to being rookied by the Pies. Had trained at a couple, not sure about North, but definitely had a go at the Cats.

I Agree. Can we call one of them Colvan?

on a slight tangent but kinda apt given it is the spring racing carnival ...

IT would be interesting to know how many people have had their lives changed by backing the winner of a Melbourne Cup, but there are a couple of them in the Mayes family.

Teddy Mayes used to deliver margarine in the Caulfield area. In 1942, he told customers on his delivery run that, if it looked like rain, to back Colonus.

Sure enough, it rained and Teddy plonked a few pounds on the long-shot.

It duly greeted the judge and, with his winnings, Teddy bought a potato chip business for his two sons, Colin and Ivan, and named it Colvan after them.

And for the next 30 years, Colvan chips was an Aussie institution.

Great stuff JW.

Suggestion then for nicknames for Crisp:

Burnt

Smiths

Colvan

French

Quentin
